Advice for a Natural Diet for a new tripawd who has food allergies and will be taking chemo pills

Hi,

My dog Champ is a new tripawd who has food allergies and will be taking a low-dose chemo pill for 6 months (at least).

Does anyone have a lead on a natural diet? I found a food store that has ground lamb on a regular basis. I have some friends who hunt but it will still be hard enough to get enough venison to feed him for a year.

I would make fresh cooked lamb burgers for him but I'm not sure what the ratio whould be of meat to grains to veges and which ones are best for him. I also don't want to do anything to interfere with the chemo.

Any leads or suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks,

Joy

Joy, as one who has been doing the allergy thing for 12 years now, I know where you are coming from.  I want to share one thing our vet asked me to do when we decided to do chemo on Trouble.  The first thing I wanted to do was get her on a healthier eating plan, but he specifically asked that I not change her diet until after the chemo was finished.  His concern was that the change in diet could cause a reaction and we wouldn't know if it was the chemo or diet.  You may wish to have this discussion with your vet.

If you still want to try a natural diet, here is a website with several different choices – Cedar Creek Veterinary.  One of the diets is the reducing diet I have had Trouble on since July.  After she hit her target weight, I just kept increasing the amount until she stabled out.  I add a supplement, fish oil, and glucosamine to hers.

Have you checked out the Tripawds Nutrition blog yet? The Diet page has lots of links to healthy cancer dog diet information, and don't miss Jerry's cancer dog diet and nutrition plan. We also highly recommend Wysong's new starch free Epigen, a high protiein kibble alternative.

You will also find lots of great homemade dog food recipes in the Tripawds Downloads blog. Dr Dressler's comprehensive canine cancer care guide is the most popular e-book among cancer dog caregivers, and he also has this free dog cancer diet ebook download. Jerry's recent review of Go Rawr may also be of interest.

Finally, the Tripawds Amazon blog has lots of recommended reading, including some great Natural Pet Health Books by Dr. Richard Pitcairn.

Thanks for asking, hope this helps… you now have your homework cut out for you! Please keep us posted about your chosen nutrition plan for Champ!
