The Last Battle-A Poem

I wanted to share this poem that was given to me by a friend after she heard we had to let Wrigley go. ( this is my same friend who offered Wrigley's name at mass when the priest would ask for special intentions for the sick, and the same one who thinks she should have Wrigley's surgeon do her hip replacement since Wrigley recovered so quickly)

A daughter of a friend of hers wrote it when they had to day goodbye to their dog. I found it very helpful in reminding me that the last final act of love we give our faithful companions is the one of letting them go. It is always the hardest decision to make- knowing when.

It never gets any easier.

Seanne

If it should be that I grow frail and weak, and pain should keep me from my sleep,

Then will you do what must be done, for this last battle can't be won.

You will be sad I understand, but don't let grief then stay your hand,

For on this day, more than the rest, your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many years, you wouldn't want me to suffer so.

When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where my needs they'll tend, only stay with me til the end.

And hold me firm and speak to me, until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree, it is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved, from pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't greive that it must be you, who has to decide this thing to do:

We've been so close- we two these years, dont' let your heart hold any tears.

Peace.

That is really, really beautiful Seanne and Angel Wrigley, I'm sure it was difficult to type it – thanks for sharing it with us. Reminders that the final act is one of love is always needed for us humans I think.

What a beautiful reminder that love is at the heart of the decision.  I think being reiminded of that increases peace about it.  Thank you, Seanne, for sharing.
