What a beautiful Tribute to Calvert. I never get tired of looking at his mug.  Sounds like Calvert picked Shiloh for you.  Please try to enjoy. I know it is very difficult not to get crazed about the little things like vomiting.  I find myself doing it to.  Shiloh is lucky to have you.

Hooray for Shilo feeling good. Sorry about the shoes though. Crazy pup!

You are definitely processing the grief. You are recognizing it and thinking about it and what you've described sounds perfectly normal and reasonable, it's so understandable why you're having those thoughts of anger and what-ifs. Work through them just as you are and you'll get through this healthier than ever. Calvert is guiding you every step of the way, while Shilo is serving as your daily reminder that life does get better. Keep it up!

Days 12-16

Merry Christmas Calvert!! I know you are up there at the Bridge, but know I send my love. It's not an easy Christmas because I miss you very much. I wish you could have been here to sniff out some presents! It's ok though, I know you had to go. I know you gave me Shiloh for Christmas early!! Thanks for being a DOGGONE good match maker! Shiloh has a lot to learn. He reminds me a lot of you. The way he snuggles, and the way he plays with Vader. (Vader misses you by the way, but he's very happy you sent us Shiloh too!!)

I know you have everything you want up there, so I'm guessing the one thing you'd want from me would just be to be happy, and never forget you. Don't worry darling, I could NEVER forget you!!! Even when my heart stops aching, whenever that will be, I'll never ever forget the paw-print you left on my heart.

The adoption lady that adopted Shiloh to us posted our story to Facebook, from what she'd read on my facebook page and what i'd told her.

“Who Saved Who”?? This is “Their” Adoption story……

Shiloh was saved in early October from a horrible life of cruelty. When I rescued him, he was only a mere 18 pounds. Shiloh’s story was shared on this page about how he suffered at the hands of his abuser who was ultimately found guilty of cruelty to animals.

Shiloh was put up for adoption a couple weeks ago after he was healthy enough. Applications started coming in, but one particular application really pulled at my heartstrings.

This story becomes intertwined in the lives involving a dog named Calvert & Vader and their human mom.

You see, Calvert was a rescue who after only a few short years was diagnosed with Renal Failure. All the steps were taken to prolong and treat Calvert but in the end it was too much for Calvert and his family made the decision to help him to the “Rainbow Bridge”.

Not only did this affect his human family but the loss was also noticeable to their other dog, Vader. Vader and Calvert were inseparable. Their bond was deeper than anyone knew. Vader had given up on life after the loss of his brother and his family watched him loss more pep for life daily.

It was then the family started thinking of adding another dog to the family in hopes of offering another pet the love and compassion that was bestowed upon Calvert, however, although that bond was there with Calvert and Vader; Vader is very selective on who he likes and doesn’t like dog wise.

The decision was made for Vader and his family to come meet Shiloh in a neutral area and all was prepared for Vader to not allow Shiloh into their lives. To everyone’s surprise, not only did Vader love Shiloh upon first sight…. Vader wanted to play immediately.

It was such a wonderful adoption on so many levels. From the love and loss of Calvert to opening up her home to another rescue in honor of Calvert; to bringing life back into a dog who ultimately had given up on life after the loss of his brother and to a family that gets to see the bond between two dogs and the life it brought back into both of them.
Thank you to the family for the feeling of completeness in getting another dog knowing they aren’t replacing him, but making different memories with another rescue in need.

Thank you Calvert, Vader and Shiloh……

Angie, thanks so much for sharing that with us -- I loved the post that the rescue did. Naturally you are missing Calvert terribly. Even though one dog can't make up for the loss of another I'm so glad that Shiloh came into your lives and that Vader -- the obviously dangerous pit bull (sarcasm font) who shouldn't be trusted with littler dogs -- welcomed Shiloh with open paws. Love, love LOVE that video! Speaking of videos, I hope @Elizabeth is reading this.

Elizabeth, Marshall started barking and running around like a crazy man and it took me a few seconds to figure out why.

He had heard the Vader/Shiloh video and thought there were strange people and other dogs in his house. lol! I tried to get him to calm down and chill out but ended up just muting it. We'll be doing some desensitization training with that boy over the holiday break.  ;-)

Deb and Angel Lexie* Diagnosed at age 13. Tried radiation first; wish we had amputated upon diagnosis (even with lung mets). Joined Club Tripawd April 2014 & Lexie loved life on 3 legs! Advice: Start physical therapy as soon as your vet clears it, especially hydrotherapy if available :-) See Lexie pics here.

What a wonderful story, and although this Christmas is much sadder for you, it is also a time of new beginnings and bittersweet emotions.....May this new pup add happiness, and love to your life after sweet Calvert, but I know that Calvert brought this pup to you and Vader, and will be watching over all of you from now on.....

Love,

Day 17-21

Friday I checked my mail forthe first time in about a week and a half. My Vet and the staff at my vet clinic sent me a sympathy card for Calvert. It was veryb sweet, they all had kind words to say. Veey thankful for them.

Every day, Shiloh rekinds me a little like Calvert. When infirst got Calvert, he was full of energy like Shiloh is. And Calvert and Vader played soo much, just like Shiloh and vader do now. Shiloh is helping me remember Calvert the best way possible; focus on the times that were more fun. :-).

With every rescue dog comes challenges though. Shiloh is an escape artist andnjumped the baby gate , andna double baby gate . So I purchased a 41" gate with only verticle bars to tey to keep him in my kitchen. He has a raw spot on his nose from rubbing it on the kennel trying to get out. Im sure if it was a plastic kenne inwould be posting pictures of Chewed through sides lime Calvert by now. Lol. The gate works great. :-)

I also found Shiloh is eating his poop. :-(. I come home to smear marks on the floor and 1/2 of his stool left. So for now, im making sire food bowls are full while im gone to make sure hes just not getting hungry and resorting to eating his feces because he is starving. We will see. I am determined to show him and prove to him that he no longer needs to fear of starving to death.

I just had a chance to read what the adoption lady wrote, that is so beautiful!

That's so nice that Shiloh is touching you heart in so many ways. And your patience in raising him speaks volumes. Nobody could have been better suited to show this pup that a good life is all his for the asking.

I hope you solve the poop eating issue soon! Eeew! ugh

for the time being, I have a dental care product like listerine for doggies, you pour an appropriate amount in their water, like a tablespoon per quart. I also have a foaming tartar remover I am using.

Oh the lengths we go to! I'm resourceful though. I'll try anything. A friend suggested to try white meat tenderizer and sprinkle it on his food.

Patience is right. Calvert taught me that for sure. I was so lucky to have called him my poochie smoochie face. LOL.

Not as much of a fan of car rides, No one was as good of a car rider as Calvert. Calvert would get in, lay down, and enjoy the ride. Vader gets in, and will stand on the center console and lean on me for the whole ride. Shiloh gets in and is all over the car. In the front seat, in the back seat looking out the back windshield, trying to get in my lap. He will not sit still. Except for these photos I happened to capture. :)

Kenneling is not a bad thing, but this is why I didn't want to kennel him any longer and got the 41" gate. He must have tried to get out and rubbed his nose raw on the pink spot. The gate works great. :)

Not to hard to install, and no horizontal bars or wiring that Shiloh can climb over. He stays in the kitchen now while I'm at work. :)

Day 364

Hello! It's been quite awhile since I've been here, and I miss you guys. I miss Calvert every day. Tomorrow marks one year since Calvert passed. Not a day has gone by in which I didn't think about him once. The pain ebbed away, but his memory never did. Everyday is easier, but I never will forget him.

Vader and Shiloh are doing great! I've also added another member to my poochie family. Lucy is 3 1/2 years old and she is a Yorkie-malteese mix. They all get along great!

Going to get a memorial stone and head out to my mom's and visit sometime this month.

That's really all for now! Happy Holidays everyone!
