This is none of my business to post, but Pat, Ruthie's mom has apparently lost her horse today….I just received an email from her and I know she had the vet out yesterday, but this morning everything was much much improved. He has been her trail companion for 24 years….how her heart must ache tonight. I had OJ for a long 17 years and we have our dogs for around 14, can you imagine 24 years with a loving companion and suddenly he is gone.
Rest in Peace Dunc

OfflineI brought Dunc home when he was just 4…he lived here the next 24 years although we did quite a bit of traveling to different places to ride. Like the time in the Sierras when we all got terribly lost and a 3 hour ride turned into a 9 hour ride in a bone chilling rain. When all the other horses crawled into camp..Dunc did a full out trot! I was never so proud of him. He wasn't big but had a big big heart and we had a lot of fun.
I sat with Ruthie afterwards and she gave me lots of kisses. I was so glad she was with me. She loved to lick Dunc's nose for some strange reason. I'll see you at the Bridge big guy!
We're so sorry, Pat, to hear about Dunc. We'll keep you and Ruthie in our hearts.
Sending lots of hugs,
Holly, Zuzu and Holly's mom

OfflineI'm so sorry about Dunc. I think dogs and horses are in a separate animal category for their willingness to accept a human as a friend. It sounds like the two of you had a lot of great adventures. May the good memories help ease the pain.

OfflineOh, I'm so sorry to hear about Dunc. It's heart warming to know how loved he was for 24 years. I know this will leave a big hole in your heart. May the sky be bluer and pastures seem greener for him as he romps around waiting to see you again.
Comet - 1999 to 2011She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
My sincere condolences Pat. I too lost a special horse, Jericho, at 28 years old. I found this poem:

OfflinePat and Ruthie - so sorry to hear about Dunc. He sounds like he was one very special horse.
Dawn – so sorry to hear about Jericho too. Your tribute is just beautiful. Very heartwarming and special. I also love the God and Dog video – it rings so true! Thanks for sharing these.

OfflineThank you so much Dawn for sharing that. Perhaps Jericho & Dunc are at the bridge side-by-side lazily munching grass. I thought I was out of tears, guess not. We are lucky to have known these wonderful creatures and that they let us be a part of their lives.
Pat, sorry to hear about your horse. Growing up on a dairy farm I understand the attatchment we get to animals other than dogs, although I think we get closer to our dogs than cows, I think you can be just as close to a horse as a dog, and I know the bad feelings you are having. Let the memories help you through the hard part, our thoughts are with you, Gus and Dan
I have two cows and am milking Ms. Edie, so I agree 100%. I love my cows. My cow "gives" me her milk. Trust me, she doesn't have to, she chooses to because she likes me.
My dad calls all animals "little heartbreakers". But I couldn't imagine living without them, they make me a better person. :)
