Dakota - Fighter Until the End

Dakota slipped away from us last night.  11 months from diagnosis and 2 weeks away from his ampuversary. Our journey is over.  Lung mets were found three weeks ago and while he seemed to be doing okay on the pred and tramadol, he took a turn for the worse on Thursday night.  I had to travel out of town for work Thursday and Friday and as I hugged him goodbye that morning I whispered "please buddy hang on until I get home".  He did.  I raced back home and had almost an hour to say my goodbyes.  We knew what decision had to be made.  As we laid him on the table while his dear and caring doctor made preparations, he took one long lasting deep breath, and then he was gone.  A fighter until the end he did what he has been doing for almost 14 years – doing everything he could to please and love me.  Our hearts are hurting as our home feels empty.  He has been my devoted companion in the highest and lowest points of my life. Dedication, love and lots of laughter is what he gave us each and every day.  He was the best secret keeper ever.  Run free my friend.

I am so thankful for this site and the information I gleaned from here and the support of the members.  As each person on here knows, this is no easy journey, but tripawds makes it better.  I will check in from time to time on those of you continuing your journey.  Best wishes to you all.

So sorry to hear about Dakota. I'm glad you were able to be with him, I think it gives you some sense of comfort on this part of the journey knowing he knew you are with him when he went to sleep. Our sympathy, Spirit Gus and Dan

I am heartbroken for you.  Dakota was a fighter til the end, he loved you enough to hang on until you could be with him.  How very special that is.  Fourteen years is a really long life, and I know it was a happy one with you.  I know the recent tripawd angels will welcome Dakota and show him the way until you meet again.

RIP sweet Dakota.  Run free at Rainbow Bridge.

I am so so sorry for your loss.  I know how quickly this can happen and I'm so glad that you were there with Dakota to say your goodbyes.  I lost my Mackenzie a month ago, and every day is a painful day knowing that she's no longer with us.   You had 14 wonderful years with Dakota and for that, you were truly blessed as was he.    But I know that doesn't take away from the pain you are feeling now.  My heart goes out to you and I hope that you will find peace and comfort soon.

My deepest condolences.

Kami, Angel Mackenzie and Kobe

My sweet golden Mackenzie.  She became my angel on Dec 29, 2010 at the age of 8 1/2  although she was always my angel from the time we brought her home.  She was diagnosed with osteosarcoma in Sept 2009 and officially became a tripawd (front leg) on Nov 5, 2009.  She will be forever in my heart and now she's running free with all of our other tripawd heroes.  I love you Mackenzie!

My deepest condolences in your loss with Dakota.  His face is beautiful and full of love just from his avatar.

We are here for you, please know that.  You do not have suffer this terrible loss alone.  I'm sure you have a lot of stories about Dakota and we'd love to hear them.

In the meantime, try to remember the happy moments.  It is those that will get us through these dark days.  I'm trying to do that myself right now with the sudden loss of my pink angel Comet.

My heart goes out to your and your family.

Warm wishes,

Comet's mom

I am sorry that Dakota had come to the end of his Journey.  You had a wonderful, long life together. The memories you built together will one day make you smile when you tell his story.

Sending strong and peaceful thoughts your way tonight.

I'm so sorry that Dakota has passed.

We have lost too many of our pup kids lately.  How wonderful that you were able to share 14yrs. That's incredible, even without cancer.  How wonderful though, that he did indeed, hold on til you got home and got to be together at the end of his journey.

It's a tough time. I understand all too well, as do too many others.

My best to you and your family.

I'm so sorry that you had to say goodbye to Dakota. He really sounds like he was a brave fighter and wonderful companion. We miss them so much! Try to take comfort in that you released him from his pain and from his cancer.

Sadie is my 9yr old Rott/Shepherd mix. Diagnosed with osteosarcoma in her right scapula 1/28/10. Our brave girl had her amputation 2/13/10 and her last chemotherapy on 6/6/10. Unfortunately, a tumor appeared in her back right leg and on 10/7/2010 Sadie's earthly journey came to an end.  On 10/24/2010 we adopted Ranger, a handsome Rott/Lab mix tripawd (got hit by a car) I think Sadie sent him to us. http://ranger.t.....pawds.com/

What a sweet boy, Dakota.  You gave him a good life.  It is so hard to say goodbye, but he is free without limitations right now.  Running with all the spirit dogs at the bridge.  You will see him again.  In the meantime be strong; Dakota is happy.  Spirit Opie's mom
