Hello everyone….I am new to this site so any help/suggestions/comments will be very helpful to me. My Little Gypsy is a 2 year old yorkie/bichon mix. 8 weeks ago, we had a horrible wind storm here in ohio & my front door blew open & Gypsy ran outside & was hit by a car.  She had a compound fracture to her right front leg.  She is very lucky to still be with us after getting hit by a car & only weighing 8 pounds. The vet did surgery & tried fixing the bone, and she wore a cast on the leg for 8 weeks.  She went back to the vet today for her check-up & he said the bone is not healing.  So he will amputate her little leg tomorrow. My husband & I have no children & Gypsy is like our baby.  I am soooo nervous about this surgery.  I work in a hospital, so of course I am aware & worry about the worst things that could happen.  Like blood clots & such.  We have spoiled her rotten since she has had the cast on her leg.  Feeding her by hand, with a spoon, rocking her to sleep at night.  What can I expect when she comes home?  Her surgery is tuesday & the vet said she will probably come home on wednesday….isn’t that really soon??  Also…she is a total water dog.  Will having a front leg amputated make her not be able to swim anymore?? Any thoughts, comments, stories, support will be helpful to me.  Thanks everyone.  Holly.

Hi Little Gypsy! Thanks for joining the discussion forums. Your little gal will be much better off without that cast. Please don't be nervous about the surgery, or she'll follow your lead and worry too!

What she needs most is for you to be a calm, strong pack leader now. Then some rest and recuperation. Before you know it she'll be surprising you with laps around the house again.

You will find plenty of advice throughout these forums. Just search for specific concerns or browse the various topics. Others will be sure to chime in too, so be sure to check back often.

Thanks again and welcome to our three-legged world!

Oh Holly, poor lil Gypsy. She is so adorable and so lucky to be alive and have such wonderful parents.

My Calamity had her amputation last Thursday & I brought her home on Friday. She has done pretty good, with some expected issues.

I'm not sure about the water, but I bet someone here knows.

This is a great place for support & information. everyone will help you through this as they are helping me.

Hang in there.

Sorry, missed that question ... your Little Gypsy will certainly still enjoy swimming, and it is the best exercise she can get! Just browse through my videos – most of them are of me swimming.

Just let her recuperate and rebuild her strength. Then consider the Ruff Wear K9 Float Coat. This wonderful life preserver for dogs helped me greatly and let me continue swimming just fine as I got older and weaker.

Thanks to everyone for your comments, suggestions, & support.  I hope they keep coming.  The more suggestions & stories the better.  The vet called me a couple hours ago & said the surgery went well with no complications.  Her pain is under control, & they will try to get her to eat in about 2 more hours.  I can go visit her at 5:30….I’m excited & nervous.  I am going to try my hardest not to get upset because I don’t want her sensing my feelings.  I’m going to try to stay positive & just keep thinking "atleast she’s alive & we still have her".

That's what I have to say about my Calamity! We've been through hell for almost a year now from a broken leg.

I hope your visit with Gypsy goes well today. She willl probably be very groggy and just rest. That is the best for her.

Hang in there!

My husband & I went & visited gypsy this evening.  They opened up her little cage door & as soon as I walked up & said "hi baby gypsy" she gave a couple wags of the tail & did a lot of whining. She was still coming out of her anesthesia.  She was really whining a lot & I was afraid that she was really in a lot of pain.  When the vet came in, he re-assured us that she has been fine, & has just started the whining because I was there.  She just stayed laying down & I petted her for about 15 minutes.  I am sooooo afraid to pick her up.  Her whole rib cage & chest is wrapped up.  What if I hurt her??  The vet said she can come home tomorrow afternoon.  I am soooooooooo nervous.

well…my little Gyspy came home today.  All my worries & concerns & stress was a total waste of time.  I am so happy to say…..Gypsy is doing absolutely WONDERFUL.  She came home today & I took her outside to potty.  I was hesitant & afraid that she was going to fall over…..but as soon as I sat her down she went hopping across the yard like she knew what she was doing.  She went peepee & did fine, then she did number 2 & was a little wobbly but didn’t fall over.  As soon as she was done, she was almost running to me.  I brought her in the house & she ate like a little piggy so her appetite is great.  She was licking her incision a little so I put her doggie pajamas on  her so she couldn’t get to it.  She rolled over on her back wanting her nightly belly rub, then I put her to bed for the night.  I am sooooo happy that she just came home today & is adapting already.  Thank God.  She will get her staples out on november 8th.

Hi Gypsy & Mom,

I'm so glad your fears all came to naught.  I'm sure you were really scared to pick her up and had all these worries in your mind, but Gypsy is proving to be a real trooper.  That is just so good to hear!

By the way, she is adorable in her pictures.  Keep us posted on how she is doing.  There sometimes are a few bumps on the road to recovery, but we'll keep our paws crossed that she continues to have a really good days to come.

Little Gypsy is adorable.  So great to hear that she is adjusting so well.  Remember that there may be some ups and downs in the next couple of weeks but once the staples are out she will feel so much better.

Keep us posted.

Hugs,

Connie & Radar
