So thankful to have found this group! I adopted Louie from a rescue 4 yrs ago. He was a stray and is missing his right, front leg. Several veterinarians believe it was an untreated injury or accident. He has a stump but it's unclear if there is enough for a brace and honestly I haven't been able to track info down on getting one. He's a 40lb hound mix, 10-12 yrs old, the sweetest boy ever! It now seems he has strained his knee (not sure on exam but doesn't appear to be a torn ACL). Monday he's going to have an acupuncture treatment and we're trying to limit his activity which is not easy... he's a super stubborn pup! Any suggestions or ideas?
Thank you for being here!

Hey guys, welcome!
Louie is such a lucky boy to have you for a mom, Mia!
So my question is, what do you think might have caused the sprain? Knowing the source will help minimize the odds of it happening again. I hope it's not serious and I'm glad you're taking him for acupuncture. Keep in mind that acupuncture can take 4-6 sessions before results are apparent. Is he on any pain meds in the meantime?
As for limiting his activity, have you tried any brain games with him? Like food puzzles and such? Even going over obedience commands is usually enough to tire out a happy-go-lucky Tripawd.
When it comes to prosthetics , a front legger usually has to have a stump going past the elbow joint in order to be a good candidate for a prosthesis. The best way to find out if Louie qualifies for one is to have him evaluated by a vet clinic that works with a prosthesis manufacturer like OrthoPets .
We are glad you found us too! I hope Louie is feeling better soon.
