I'm so sorry to hear Frodo has passed.  I looked up Vinca and found they grow along the California coast, which is where we are.  Thank you so much for sharing about this flower.  We don't normally let our dogs go around eating random things, but as we all know, sometimes they can sneak one by you every now and again.  Please know that because of Frodo's sacrifice, we are now better educated and more aware of our surroundings.  I'm sorry you lost your brave boy.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

Thank you all for your kind words.  I am totally shattered. He survived cancer for 4.5 years and is killed by a plant? It is a week now since it has happened.  I kept a bedside vigil at the emergency centre for 48hrs.  He kept kicking in and he fought such a brave battle.  So many times I thought he would get through.

He was the reason for the website.  It was because of him I wanted to do it.  He was beside me all the way. Out promoting it with me.  We have an event in Perth in June he was suppose to be at.  The event will go ahead in his memory but it will be the hardest day for me to get through. He always sat with me raising money and meeting people. The website will carry on in his memory. As hard as that will be I will do it for him.  In his life he never once let me down and he overcame so much.  He went far and beyond the expectations anyone thought he could do.

If anyone wants to read Frodos rescue story it is up on the website.  He was the dog everyone said would amount to nothing and should be put down. We used this story to help raise funds for rescue. He would sit on his mat with a tin and people would read "his words" have tears in their eyes and put money in his tin.  He loved other dogs and he was always out there helping them.

I'm adding my condolences, too.  What a shame to make it as far as Frodo did and then have something like this happen.  Once again...it isn't fair

You gave me a lot to think about, as the spot where Murphy prefers to lie in the shade and to dig his cool spot is right in the middle of a periwinkle bed.  It has been there ever since we moved into this house almost eight years ago.  Both dogs use that area for their warm weather bed.  Now I'm worried that I need to take out that entire bed.  So far neither of them has shown an interest in eating any of the plants, just in digging them up so they can get to the cool dirt underneath.

Kathi and Murpy

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Thankyou for all your thoughts.

Frodo was one hell of a dog and there will never be another quite like him.  We have a major cancer promotion in Perth in June and that will be an especially hard day for me.  Frodo was always by my side and raising money for his rescue buddies since we dont have collection for cancer on the website.  It was suggested that I should cancel it but that was never going to happen and the website will continue.  For those of you on the fb page there is some big stuff coming up I will need help with from dog owners.  Collectively we can make a difference and I have rattled chains this week in all the right places.  I have done the ground work just need help to pull it off.

The vinca has got worldwide publicity regarding this tragic set of circumstances and I hope that I never hear of it happening to another dog. Very little is known about its toxicity.

Murphsmom- The vincas in my garden had also been there for years.  I am diligent when I buy plants always asking if they are toxic to dogs.  I was told no by two people one was a horticulturist in a nursery. At no time had Frodo or my other dogs (including rescues and I had probably 250 dogs through my house in 7 years) show any interest.  The only thing I would say is get rid of them.  Frodo paid a high price for his pig out on the vinca and the effect is into the system within 20 mins according to his oncologist today.  There was nothing I could have done unless I had him to the vet in less than that time and I would have needed to see him eat them.

I hope to see you all over on facebook so we can kick a goal together in the cancer fight.

Lisa
