Hi our three day old puppy is a tripawd. He has a spare deformed leg. The vet says if he survives, the leg will either dry up and fall off, or he will need an amputation. The spare leg has no skin. But it does have a "coating" if you will to keep it from bleeding. The momma dog just licked that off. It makes me wonder if she is doing the same thing that they do in the burn unit…sloughing the skin off…is this going to continue? We are watching her. We don't know what to expect. We know his chances of survival are, well, challenging at best. If there is anything we can do to help him we plan on doing it. We have applied to organizations to help with the potential ongoing costs associated with treatment. He is a great nurser and a really great dog. I added pics of our puppy to the tripawd facebook page.
Thank You.

OfflineWelcome to tripawds. I'm sorry you find yourself here with us.
I'm chiming in – because I had a dog with a deformed leg. Is there a reason the vet suggested the puppy wouldn't survive? Is it otherwise heathly seeming?
I adopted my girl at 6 months old so I dont know how it was at birth. Hers was deformed by the shoulder blade which turned inward and there were no bendable joint in the elbow portion.
Please keep us posted. Sending tons of good wishes!

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.

Offlinehey thanks for coming here for more insight from others. As I said in your Facebook post, I would have the vet take that stump off, I'm betting that his Momma knows something is wrong and if it continues she might even harm him. Please call your vet quickly before something awful happens.
I too am curious, why are his chances for survival so low?

I don't know why the vet said most pups like this don't survive. We are watching the momma dog very carefully. If the mother tries to harm him, we will take him from the mother and formula feed him. We are checking on her regularly round the clock. For now, all of her behavior seems appropriate. We are in the process of applying to get help from organizations that help sick pets who need life saving surgeries from the help page here. I was under the impression we had more time before the amputation would happen.
