Our giant baby boy Scout was shot in an act of human cruelty and stupidity. Thursday night our two dogs were in their yard minding their own business. We live in an apartment complex and our neighbor also has access to the yard and we share a main entryway. Someone left the gate open and both of our boys got out. I was vacuuming and the night was going as usual until I went to let the boys back in. It was dark so I didn't see anything wrong with Scout at first, all I noticed was the gate was open and I thought it was strange. As soon as he stepped inside the house I knew something was horribly wrong, he limped in so hard he almost fell flat to the floor. My husband and I got him into the kitchen and we almost lost it. He had been shot. In the chest. The sight and the smell was overwhelming. We called 911 and the police and a vet ambulance came to pick him up and make a report. He was rushed to the nearest 24/7 vet hospital and we just had to wait. The next morning we got the phone call that he was going to make it and he was lucky. The bullet went through his right shoulder and traveled diagonally missing everything internal before exiting the left ribs. We were told he would need an amputation because the shoulder was shattered beyond repair or he would have to be put down. I knew my scout was tough because he had a rough life before we got him and he had survived the parvovirus already without even missing a beat. The surgery happened Saturday morning and he had some complications unforeseen. The shoulder was shattered worse than they had thought and he had so much swelling it was hard to piece it back together. He also needed a blood transfusion and his temperature dropped dramatically during the surgery so they decided to keep him until Monday night until they were sure he was ok to go. That was yesterday and today is his first full day home. He is the tough as nails dog I always thought he was, and again he hasn't missed a beat. It's hard keeping him from being playful. It's obvious no one told him he was just shot, had massive surgery, and has over 100 staples in him.

The police office handling his case told me she has never seen a dog survive a gunshot like what he had and she is coming by this week to visit and get a picture to show everyone at the station. The dog that can survive anything. They are also still looking for the person/people who did this to him. The police think it was a teenage gang that just popped up out of nowhere a few streets down. All we know so far is that they were driving a small white car and both taillights weren't working. They are doing everything they can to catch the horrible person/people who did this.

P.S. If anyone has any tips on how to keep my new tripawd and his brother dog separated with the LEAST amount of anxiety and crying, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. Neither of them seem to notice how hurt Scout is right now and they keep crying and crying because I wont let them play (and they can play real rough). The vet said Scout needs to keep his anxiety and blood pressure down because it is causing the site to weep.

Ohhhh my gawd! Holy smokes I can't even believe what happened to your poor Scout, you have my total sympathies and hugs coming your way. I'm so very, very sorry.  But OH SO glad he SURVIVED!

I hope you don't mind I moved your post here, this is the main place for stories of dogs and cats who lost a leg for reasons other than cancer. It's also a great place for inspawration, you'll see that Sout will handle all of this so much better than you ever thought he would. Dogs, unliike people, don't have regrets or anger or blame, they just want to have a great day, every single day, it's up to us to Be More Dog . Try to remember that each time your blood boils over and you get so mad you want to scream. I know I would. So you can vent here and scream and yell all you want. I hope with all my heart that they find that evil horrible person.

Now, as far as helping with your other pup cope, I know there will be some great feedback from others who have multiple dogs (we don't). But in the meantime, if there's anything else we can help with dont' hesitate to holler. We will be here for you. If you want to come to the chat, you'll find people in there most evenings. Do check out Jerry's Required Reading List and the Tripawds e-books Library, you'll find lots of your questions answered there too.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this. I can't even imagine. But thank you for joining, we'll help you get through this and show Scout that life will be great again.

OH MY Gosh.  I am so sorry this happened to your poor baby.  What in the heck is wrong with people.  I hope they catch the Aholes who did this to him.

We used baby gates to seperate for a few days but if they play rough you may have to do it longer.  Can you make a recovery area for him in the same room but that your other dog can't get into?  We didn't have that problem as my 2 were 6 and didn't play rough at that time

Geez...I can hardly respond. Could thing you already have some good advice because I'm pretty sleechless and soooooo angry! That's not very helpful to you though!!

Right now your sweet pup needs rest...whether he realizes it or not! 100 staples...OMD!!! That boy cannot be jumping around for awhile!! What meds do they have him on? Lain meds? Antibiotic? Anti-inflammatory? How is his apletite? Drinking? Peeing? Pooping?

I'm just in awe of this dog!! And you two learly are his hero!

Has this been repprted to your local media stations? They could certainly help in bringingnthese cowardly soulless thugs to justice. You can bet this isn't the first act of cruelty, and it won't be their last unless they are stopped now.

Stay connected...we are now family and we are INSTANTLY in love with your dog!!! We are his cheering section! We are his biggest fans!

When you can, we would love to here more about this incredible but and all your delightful pack! Pictures, oh how we love pictures around here!

Hugs and love to all!

Thank you two for the supportive words, and I don't mind that you moved my post at all. I really had no clue where to post it. I am so thankful that he made it and now I just have to keep him from trying to roughhouse and run around so the site doesn't have anything happen to it. Praying for no more complications and a quick recovery. I hope they catch the (bad word) who did this too. I can't stand looking at every white car in our neighborhood just wondering if it was them.

Scout is set up in our room where all of the dog beds and blankets (all freshly bleached and scrubbed) are strewn about for keep him to stay comfortable and clean. I have been rotating the two dogs all day where one gets a few hours in the bedroom and the other gets to roam the house. They just keep crying to see one another but I know they will get too excited and try to bunny hop on top of each other and that just can't happen. They're both huge so it would definitely hurt Scout.

He has a bandage wrapped around the wound but it keeps slipping down so I've put a clean tight-ish shirt on him so it will stay a bit better. Any advice is greatly appreciated I've never been through this and It's scary not knowing what I'm supposed to do for him, he's my baby.

Thanks benny55! He is doing very good with all of the daily stuff and I think the pain meds have given him the munchies (he was already a vacuum before lol). His eyes pop out of his head for treats. He is on Rimadyl for the pain, Cephalexin antibiotic, and he had anxiety when he was at the vet so tramadol as needed. No anti-inflammatory. The meds have made him super thirsty too.

He was afraid to poop because of balance issues but today he finally got the hang of it and he is even peeing lifting his leg without stumbling! I stand next to him, arms stretched towards him for balance to be safe, but he's really got it down!

I honestly hadn't thought of going to the media but that is a GREAT idea, they need to be stopped and they should hope the police catch them before anyone around here does. All of my neighbors LOVE Scout and are on a witch hunt for the person who did this. I really think he was targeted because he is a pitbull mix and it makes me sick.

It's good to know there is a community for us and him. We will post some pics and keep everyone updated on his progress!

His avatar picture ks ADORABLE!!! Precious, precious soul!

One thing that will help with his traction is to put scatter rugs around if you have hardwood floors.

Sounds like using a tee shirt to help stop the wrap from slipping is a good idea. If it continues, you may have to ask for suggestiins on how to lrevent it.

You are doing a GREAT job in caring for Scout...and your other pups too! Sometimes dogs instinctively know to stay away from a an injured dog in the process of healing....sometimes..not always. It could be that if they could come in and sniff around and check things out fkr just a minute, then maybe they wouldn't keep trying to get in to see him. You know your dogs best though. For nkw it's all about Scout healing.

Hugs to all!

Your babies pic is too cute too. It's the same "begging for love and attention" face Scout makes. Tomorrow morning he goes in to the vet to check if the weeping has stopped, or at least slowed down and they should be re-wrapping him then. That was the vets main concern, he was leaking a lot more than she'd like. I'm guessing the wrap is to compress the area so it doesn't.

I also have tons of gauze and a few ace bandages we stocked up on just in case. I read aloooooooot of info when I found out this was going to happen but you don't know what you're in for until you're in it.

I'm honestly not as worried about Rusty (the other baby) as I am worried about Scout not knowing his limits with playing. He got home and the first thing he tried to do was...well... get "inappropriate" with Rusty's behind. They have a bromance, what can I say. Gross as it was that was when I knew he was going to be fine lol.

I'm in Cleveland, Ohio

I am so glad he is going to be ok. How horrible and frightening for both you and him. I sure hope they catch who did this. Can you put both pups on short leashes to visit with each other. That way, if they get out of hand, it would be a lot easier to separate them. Just a thought. hang in there. Lori, Ty & the gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

ooh I do like Lori's idea to see if they can be on short leashes together even just for a few minutes. Usually dogs give each other plenty of space when one comes home from amputation surgery. They typically just seem to know that space is required.

You are doing great. You took a big step by coming here, and that says a lot about how much you love him. And yes he is gorgeous by the way!

If he shows any signs of panting, whining or pacing, that probably means he needs his pain medication adjusted. You may want to ask your vet about giving him tramadol at more regular intervals to keep the pain under control. It's better to stay ahead of it than let it get bad and then give tramadol.

I cannot even believe what I am reading. What the F is wrong with people? Forgive my harsh language.... unreal. Horrible. Just horrible.

You've gotten some great advice from the group here. My girl Shelby was a rear amp but I know Scout (great name by the way) will do amazing! After all he's been through thus far... what a lucky dog to have you!

I love his little face in your avatar... soooooo cute and kissable!!!!

I don't have any advice on having 2 dogs or anything else but wanted to let you know that I'm sending love and support from LA!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

The cruelty of humans towards animals just dumbfounds me.  The person/people who shot your precious Scout are just cowardly pieces of crap in society and I hope law enforcement are able to bring them to justice for what they did.

That being said I'm glad to hear that Scout is doing fairly well in his recovery.  That he's peeing, pooping, and eating are all good signs.  I would look to get him on a steady dosing of the Tramadol because it's a little stronger pain management med than the Rimadyl (which we kind of equate to ibuprofen around here).  If Scout seems to have a hard time with the Tramadol (my Leland didn't do well on it) you could speak with your vet about starting Gabapentin (which is what my Leland took).  Gabapentin is also typically what's prescribed for "phantom limb pain" which can happen to our furbabies as you'll see perusing this community's postings.

I will definitely be keeping Scout in my thoughts as he recovers!

I live in an area where something like this isn't uncommon.  I was impressed that you had an animal ambulance available.  That had to be a great help!  Scout must be one tough guy, he will adjust quickly to his new normal.

I so hope they find and prosecute the person who did this. I also hope they make them pay your veterinary bill. That's only fair. Sending tons of good thoughts for a speedy recovery.
