Hi everyone, great to find this place and hope I can find some good info to help out Peg. Her story is a bit unusual and unique, not sure anyone else has a similar story and I dont have alot of time to spend searching so thought this would be a great place to start.

Approximately 5 wks ago I rescued two pregnant Sharpei mixes from the euthanasia list at my local shelter in Phoenix, AZ. A mother and daughter I believe and both are feral and distrusting of humans more like terrified. On May 3 the black momma (daughter) whelped 7 pups. Peg was the first to be born, a cute black girl with the chrome package sporting four legs and a tail. Because these moms were feral and pregnant they were in deplorable condition, skeletons basically. My problem soon became trying to supplement them with calcium after they whelped and I was unsuccessful in oral administration and anything I tried to put it in to get them to eat it didnt work. I settled for chicken leg thigh quarters and cooked em down and fed cottage cheese and yogurt. The mommas came to me with Tick Fever and I couldnt treat them initially due to nursing, but the condition of the red momma (mother of black mom) was so horrid that leaving the pups on her was risking her life. On day three of Pegs short little life (interesting that it was day "3") Pegs mom chewed off her front leg at the elbow. I gave her clavamox drops til they were gone and she will require surgery at some point to amputate at the joint.

So here is my dilemma, I know that dogs do just fine on three legs, but all the scenarios I know of come from dogs that actually had and walked on four legs prior to amputation. Poor Peg is trying to learn how to balance and walk without a front leg and she cannot. She is currently 4 1/2 weeks old. When she first started trying to become mobile her head would just thrash all over the place so I took a piece of styrofoam and made a brace around her tiny little neck. I keep carpet in her playpen so she can have good traction , but I am worried about her rear because it already seems that it might be compromised.  I had to take her from her mom and bottle raise her because she was not thriving, I think that having no control over her head movement became exhausting for her when trying to reach mom and by the time she did she had no energy to nurse.

My dilemma seems to be trying to find some sort of temporary prosthesis that can help Peg learn to walk and be able to eat and potty.  I am still bottle feeding her a mix of goats milk, baby cereal and puppy weaning formula.  She cannot eat out of a pan and she has a hard time going #2.  I know that once she grows stronger and matures the loss of that leg will not slow her down, but I have never had to experience a dog learning to walk and function without a front leg.  Another concern is the tendon that attaches from the front of the shoulder to the joint is very tight and might be the bigger part of the problem as to why she flails around with no control.

I had her in with the red moms babies early on but they soon outgrew her and she just couldnt hold her own.  She has a stuffed guinea pig that gives her support when she sleeps and her cousin Ughy (hez pretty ugly) whose teeny tiny and behind the growth curve.  I also take hand towels and roll them up and place them in her pen serpentine style so she can use them to help support her movement and hopefully help her to learn to balance on three legs.  Ive wracked my brain trying to figure out a way to give her temp support and only thing I found while out shopping was Barbie thigh high boots, I just havent quite figured out how to attach it.  If nothing else I am most certainly creative.

Please understand I am part of a 501c3 Org and am currently unemployed, which is why I was able to take on two pregnant feral (didnt know they were til I got em out) moms and a total count of 14 pups with 11 surviving.  I do not have any income from which to provide Peg with mechanical wonders, and at this point she will be in my care for quite some time before the right home can be found, but hopefully someone out there has helpful suggestions or maybe a similiar situation and perhaps a device they are willing to share or sell cheap that can help Peg thru her growing stage.

I havent had time to peruse this forum or sites to see if I can share vids but I have pics but right now I have to go out and feed and clean up after the rest of Pegs relatives.  It is triple digits here now in Phoenix, so to say I am challenged on many fronts would be an understatement.

Thanks so much, Im so happy to have found all of you!

Hi Jaime, welcome to Tripawds, your future posts won't need approval. Hope you don't mind that I moved your post here to "Beyond Cancer" but it's an ideal place for stories like Pegs, she's not the first pup to face such challenges. We've had a number who were born with deformities or no limb, and they went on to lead great lives.

You certainly have your hands full but your instincts are very good and you're doing great! From what rehab vets have told us, young Tripawds definitely have extra challenges when it comes to learning how to walk. Since they don't have balance or coordination down yet, it's tough to learn how to get around. A prosthesis is only realistic if there is adequate stump left to attach it to. It sounds like she has her front leg left at the elbow, correct? Does she try to use it at all? If so, this may or may not become an issue if you don't go the prosthetic route. Some dogs will try to use the remaining stump to the point of banging it around so much that it never heals and causes more injury, eventually requiring a full amputation.

If there's enough stump left, a prosthetic may be realistic but keep in mind that she would need several fittings as she grows, which is extremely expensive and training is very time consuming. It's do-able, but a lot of effort on both the dog and the human. Check out these OrthoPets interviews for more info.

I would be careful about trying to improvise some type of prosthesis on your own, it could create more problems in the long run by altering her gait even moreso that she doesn't develop proper coordination. In the meantime, is there any chance at all that the rescue has the funds for helping to pay for at least an initial visit with a vet rehab specialist? A professional evaluation is usually around $150 but it would be able to tell you how to help her on your own and do things to improve her coordination, balance, etc.
Hang in there, she will be growing so fast and before you know it she'll get strong. More folks here will chime in soon, so stay tuned for more ideas. Thanks again for joining us.

Welcome Jamie and Peg!

Or should I say...SAINT JAMIE!! You are indeed a Sant!!

I don't have specific insightbut, as Jerry said, unfortunately, there are many pups who, for various reasons, have a stump, or deformed iseless leg, or no fourth leg at all. Most likely amputation will be the best solution when Peg is old enough. And as yo already know, Peg will absolutey be able to live a joyful and hap lofe on three legs... no problem!!

Gosh, we just had a Great Dane puppy on the site a bit ago born with a deformed front leg...the pup just recently had the amputation (around six or eight months I think). The inbetween time will be quite challenging for yo and I so applaud your compassin and determination in making sure all of these sweet souks have a great chance at life....Ughy included!!

When you can, and I know your hands are very full right now, please post some pictures!

Sending you lots of higs and tons of appreciatin for your commitment to the voiceless!

Oh my goodness what a handful! I agree with Jerry, improvising might do more harm than good. Do you or anyone you know have any contacts with anyone involved with an ortho or vet rehab office? I don't know if it would work, but you could call some and tell them your story to see if they'd be willing to volunteer their services or even offer a discount? It might be worth a shot. We have a veterinarian here who does really discounted surgeries so you could even try researching something like that.  It sounds like Peg definitely needs someone to take a look and see if the remaining part of her leg is worth keeping there and to offer some guidance in how to help her get around.

thank you so much, I can certainly try to raise funds, I had alot of help from my community before I pulled the moms and made my decision based on the percentage of people willing to help and determined that even if only half of them came thru it was doable.  I got lots of donations of blankets and towels and newspapers and canned food and kibble for the ensuing litters.  But I had to do all the work alone cause they are feral.  County officials upset me greatly when I went to pull another mom with pups for another group off the e list they told me because I asked for help with the two feral moms that I couldnt save anymore moms n pups cause I am supposed to be able to do it on my own.  Well let me tell you what hit that fan!  First off people offered the help so when they all wanted to know what I needed I made a public list.  I could not have done it without them.  I made my decision based on the offers of help.  I might not have alot of cash but one thing I do have is time and that is why most moms n pups perish cause no one has the time commitment, I would think for the shelter not having to be under the radar for euthanizing two pregger moms and the fact that they are already under fire by other rescue groups and these groups are calling for reform and resignation that I did them a big favor, but instead all I got was grief. Thats fine tho there are plenty of other shelters in the area that need help.

So when the time comes I will rally for help again and see if I can get some vets to help, Im pretty well known in these parts and have had help in past from great Vets so Im going to keep a good attitude on that front and besides see her pic?  How cute is she?  Who can not help that cute lil girl?  My "Peg"gy Sue u u......  I still cant figure out how to post pics here not sure what the Source Box is implying?  Thanks all I feel empowered now and when I have time will look at all the resources and links avail here.

Oh my goodness, I have to see more pics of her!! She is adorable! Here is a link on how to post photos:

http://tripawds.....-photos-1/

We have a rescue organization here in Virginia run by a lady who pulls just pregnant mom's and their pups out of shelters also. She does it out of her house, with a network of supportive people (mostly on Facebook). I felt so sad that they wouldn't give you the momma dog. NO ONE can do all of that alone!

Welcome Jaime and Peg!

Rosie (our french mastiff) was born with a deformed/fused elbow and her right front leg was NEVER a weight bearing leg. She learned to get around just fine once she learned how to balance. Pups are amazingly resilient. Just my opinion, but I would be hesitant to try and adapt something for Peg to help her walk on 4 legs. Her reality is that she will have to learn to balance and walk and run on 3 legs and augmenting the fourth may ultimately make it harder for her to find the right alignment to get around. The reality is that many dogs do GREAT on 3 legs and, in our case, Rosie never missed the leg when it was amputated because it was essentially non-functional. Give the little girl time to grow and develop, I'm willing to bet she will continue to surprise you. Good Luck!

Hey,

I just wanted to chime in here to say that Solo55 is a very, very good friend of mine - which might be how she heard about Peg in the first placebig-grin- and she would be able to give Peg outstanding care (not to mention tons of love).  Not only does she have access to great vet care for the medical stuff, they also have a really well equipped rehabilitation center - FitPaws, cold laser therapy, water treadmill, plus more - and lots of experience with special needs puppies, including tripawds.

I hope this can help take some of the burden off your shoulders.

Hi everyone so sorry to be gone so long, I dont have much time right now for puter as not only do I have Peg but 10 of her brothers/sisters to care for and a momma chi I pulled of e list to foster for another resq group gave birth to 5 healthy happy pups so Ive been so busy, and of course I live in Phoenix, AZ and the heat index makes my schedule so that I am up all night and sleep during heat of day.  This allows pups and moms and the rest of my crew to be out enjoying the coolest part of the day....I have lights!  lol

I have an update on Peg n Ughy her brother with the cleft palate, he is so Uglyyyyyy that it makes him cute cute cute....Peg is doing better at getting around, now I can put a bowl of food down for them and they are able to eat on their own without having to be held.  I am now able to put a small little saucer of water down for them but I stand by til they are done with it so that they dont fall into it and get all wet.  The other day I walked out to find peg sitting up and she literally raised her only front leg up off the floor and waved at me....she wanted to be held to be fed, she doesnt like to be held long when shez hungry, she just wants me to hurry up and get her there.....She is quite a lil rascal and is a little bit hard on poor ughy,,,,,

I am very much interested in entertaining the idea of the wonderful person whom offered to adopt Peg.  I require home checks on all my animals but have a feeling that isnt going to be a problem at all.  I am reluctant to spay Peg and ughy at 8 wks along with their siblings, and feel that for Peg, she might need some sort of corrective surgery when she is old enough and feel that would be the time to discuss spaying her.  So I will leave my email address below so that Solo55 can contact me privately and right now I am going to go to the link that shows me how to post pics so that everyone can see!!!!

I had some nutritional issues with Peg n Ughy as they werent nursing from mom and Peg refused to drink powder or canned formula I had to seek out a wonderful gal whom has goats and supply Peg with fresh milk.  So now they are eating mush which is canned dog food a bit of baby oatmeal cereal, goats milk and a puppy weaning powder and a bit of yogurt and pumpkin.  This has brought great changes for Ughy whom no longer buckles over at the pasterns and can now stand and walk strong.  Peg too has become much stronger and more balanced.  They are so sweet and the entire litter is not noisy at all....a first for me, usually when pups are in need they all make a whole lot of racket but this crew I have never heard them cry out or carry on unless they are playing with each other.

The black dogs litter are all females, this is Pegs mom Peg was first born, and let me tell you all those females are alpha and it is quite a challenge to keep them from killing one another well not really but sometimes it sure sounds like it.  The other day my hubby was helping me cause I had a tooth extracted and it abscessed and burst from the inside outward on my cheek and I was in so much pain and he didnt listen to my instructions to bring the newspapers and stuff and set it inside the sally port gates and decided to try and walk thru a sea of pups with a box in his hand and he stepped on one of the pups feet or something and they were crying and carrying on and the momma dog went after him and he is no longer allowed to come thru the gates and I cant argue with her over that, she has every right in her mind to not let him thru....she was fine with him up to that point....so whats a girl to do?  Alas, they are all now 6 wks or just shy of 6 wks born 3 days apart and all are friendly and outgoing.  Gonna have some people come over for the next couple weeks so they can be socialized as it is too hot to take em anywhere and I dont want to risk them getting communicable diseases.

The rescue group that has supported me with the moms wanted me to take peg and ughy to a vet and I refused, they are both doing well and finally are thriving and because neither of them have had any immunity from their mothers I am not taking perfectly healthy pups to the vet so they can tell me what I already know...nothing can be done for them at such a young age and will have to be revisited later.  Ughy's cleft palate is mild and not an issue now that he is on solid foods....tube feeding was hard the third week and by the fourth he had to learn to eat paste food, it was hard for him since he had issues with nutrition and buckling over but we persevered and are past it now.  My vet would probably have taken my temp and asked me if I was OK had I brought them in there,,,cause he knows when he sees me its serious stuff.

I love this forum, thanks so much everyone....now off to the how to post pics stuff....solo my email is below

Hello all,

So Peg is just getting better and better as she grows up.  She is now 8 weeks old, potty training is going well, she quickly switched from pottying on rugs n blankets to a potty box.  I take corregated plastic (ie:voter signs) and make a box by having sides raised and put shredded paper in it.  All 9 pups out in the nursery have been using it so well that i can also have a rug down in their kennel now and they do not potty on it.  I did have to cut out center one side of box so she can easily walk in and out of it, she has tried a couple times to step over it but thinking because she gives up and goes to opening that its not comfortable for her to try to jump things.  Its only raised 2-3 inches on entrance side so I cut it from center for about a foot opening.

She can sit pretty now and wave her only front paw at us, she get soooo excited when we hold her and she is just a huge bundle of energy, she will give you kisses for as long as you will hold her in front of your face.....all the pups from this litter are very quiet they only make noise when they are playing.  She is now eating dry kibble too, but ughy keeps sitting in the water crock messing up the clean fresh water, but before ughy would grab the water bowls and drag and dump em even while peg was drinking.  Bad Bad Ughy!

I am trying to write a letter to Best Friends Admissions in Utah in hopes of getting them to take one of the feral moms off my hands so if anyone on here has a good relationship with them maybe you could give me some pointers on best way to be successful in getting my request considered.  I am part of a non profit rescue group, and i am willing to take adoptable dogs or puppies from them and place in the valley if they would just take one of them.

I cant find anyone to take one of them off my hands and i cannot rehab them together and I am not set up to keep two feral dogs in separate places here.  I know I can rehab either one of them with time but I cannot do it with them together.

So Peg has improved her balance, but she sometimes gets to hoppin around and jumpin and its kinda like whoa whoa whoaaaaaaa plop, flip, splat...lol  she is very very cute with just a pinch of evil and a whole lotta love.  She is afraid of the shop vacc and today her and ughy busted out of their enclosure and I hear all this banging goin on and my other feral dog Skittles is at end of my hallway looking down to the living room and back at me like "they are not mine, I didnt do it, and you better come do something about them"  So the bang was the broom hitting the ground and the rattle was them running into my metal rooster when they fled from the falling broom and there they are in the kitchen like "WHA?"

Peg's got an interested adopter whom resides in Kanab so here is hoping that Best Friends says YES, Peg's new family says YES and it will be an effective trip!  Luckily I live in Phoenix and love the drive to Kanab thru the painted desert.
