Ever since the surgery Quixote has been ill. I am starting to really regret the surgery, maybe just neutering him I dont know!  I flea treated the dogs 3 days ago.  Yesterday his entire body was swollen and red, he also had a fever, tongue and the inside of his ears were purplish in hue.  We have started treatments of: traameel for pain, suralan for possible ear infection, clindamycin and benedryl. The swelling has gone down quite a bit and he isn't as uncomfortable now.  His ears are still bugging him but not as badly.

Before the amputation, teeth cleaning, and neuter he was healthy.  In pain yes but HEALTHY.  Now he is not in pain but he is sick, the sores that we still dont know what they were and now this.  We are just about 3 months post op and I am really really regretting everything.  I just want him to be happy and healthy and I dont know how to do this anymore.

Obviously I'm not Doc but I jisr wanted to reach out a d give you a cyber nug. I hear your fristration and hear how you are hurtine for Quixote.

I highly doubt that any of this is related to the amputation per se, but Dr. Pam can chime in on that.

And yes, Quixote qould be livi g every seco d of everyday in worsening pain had you not done the amputation. And livong in pain is NOT a "healthy" way to live! In fact, pain can compromise a dog's ability to fight off infection and to heal properly when so.ething is amiss

And. maybe the neuter, aml sugery, etc did through his immu e system ojt of whack for a bit. This recent swelling co u ld I deed be a reaction to the fle bath or lossibl a bite of so.r sort. Regardless, I'd try and stay away from the flea dip for now

Do you have a vet in your area who is knowEdgq I. nutrition, holistic therapies, etc? He may.need a complete "detox".to cleanse his system of any chemicals, etc

I'm just throwing stuff out there for whatever it's worth. Ha g in there!! Whatever us the root cause can be figured out and, instead of treating the symptons, you'll be able to treat the cause and eradicate it!! clap

Se ding you hugs a d lpve!!!

My dogs are all strictly raw fed, Quixote was weaned on to raw and has only ever had raw (aside from the occasion mommy is lazy nights where the dogs get orijen or acana)! My gut is telling me this is related to the surgeries somehow.  He did developed leaky gut syndrome with the first surgery he ever had (the femoral head ostectomy), but that was because of the sheer number and length of antibiotics he was on.

So sorry to hear that Quixote is unwell.

Here, we have had some bumps also.  Some ear infections, and the like.  For sure, going through anesthesia and all the medication they take MUST make a dog's organism more sensitive.

Despite what the vet prescribed, I haven't treated Johnnie for fleas and ticks anymore with Frontline or anything of the sort - just regular baths and checking him out.  He's had his share of toxic stuff after the chemos.  The only thing I have been giving him is the Cardomec, every 45 days, for the hearworm.

Get well soon, Quixote!

Daniela & Johnnie

Our awesome Golden Boy was diagnosed for OSA in April 2014 in the proximal humerus, front-leg amp on 05/20/2014. Finished chemo (Carbo6) on 07/10/2014. Ongoing treatment: acupuncture + K-9 Immunity Plus ( 3chews) and home-cooked no-grain diet.   Stopped Apocaps because of liver issues.   Liver issues: controlling altered enzymes with SAM-e and Milk Thistle.  October 17:  started having seizures.  Taking fenobarbital for seizures.  April 18: started prednisone.

Thankfully Quixote does not have cancer, his amputation is due to injury. I am going to stop with the chemicals though. I dont know anymore.  I thought the surgery to remove his painful leg would fix things.  I am so tired of the vet clinic and medications and and and. I am wondering if this could be leaky guy again?!?! or if its something else? I do feel its all connected somehow though. For the moment though he seems to be doing better.  I have to medicate him again at 10 pm.

I can see this is frustrating for you. A dog in pain is not healthy. I seem to remember that Quixote did great with the amputation and was even going to flyball!

Some pets get seasonal allergies, others are sensitive to chemicals as you point out. We can all give you suggestions about supplements but you are obviously doing the best you can with what you know. I hope this passes soon and you can have some fun with Quixote.

Is he on probiotics? Maybe his system is out of wack from the antibiotics. Any chance he got into bees? I had a dog years ago that thought chasing them would be a hoot. I ran her to vet with this horribly swollen face ( she kept shaking her head and her jowls would flap, she was a Aussie, so not supposed to have a flappy face) vet said was textbook bee stings. Has he been any place that may have sprayed a lawn? Maybe something there. Like Sally, just throwing some stuff out there. Don't regret the amp. He sure is not. He knows the pain is gone. Sorry it has been such a rough go for you all. Lori, Ty & the gang

I'm sorry, you must be so frustrated and I can't blame you. Here's a thought though, and take it for what it's worth because I'm not vet: but when he had the amputation, you said your vet cleaned his teeth at the same time? Well, that kind of surprised me, because when we asked the vets at Colorado State to clean our Wyatt's teeth when he got gastropexied last year, they told us that a teeth cleaning should never get done during any type of surgery, because knocking that teeth plaque off releases bacteria into the bloodstream, which is a risky thing to do when undergoing surgery, it could cause infection.

As I said, I'm not a vet, but perhaps by getting his teeth cleaned during his amp, that's what happened, and now he has chronic low-grade infection that isn't getting cleared up because his body just hasn't had a chance to heal properly? If at all possible you might want to look into this from a second vet who takes a holistic approach toward healing. You're on the right path obviously, but maybe there's just something to this that your regular vet hasn't picked up on? Just a thought, so let us know what happens OK?

Jerry: I will talk to my vet about that possibility and I guess a long drive to the best holistic vet is in order. I have to finish the round of antibiotics I have started with him.  It is really hard to give him antibiotics however because I am allergic to most antibiotics.  He seems better today we are on the third day of antibiotics and benedryl (although I think I am not going to give the benedryl today to see what happens).

If its the plaque thing I am going to be fairly upset because NO ONE mentioned that to me, and I didnt even think about it!! I should have thought about it.

I am so worried that his health keeps going downhill.  The vet didnt call me back yesterday either:S

Thank you JERRY

Smart of you to finish the antibiotics. Please don't blame yourself for any of this, you do your best with the information you have on hand. I wouldn't have known this either if the CSU vets hadn't mentioned it, it might even be brand new information that not all vets are aware of. At this point, it's unlikely that it can be 100% proven that the dual procedure was the cause of any of this so don't be mad if you can't get a complete answer. Take things one day at a time just like Quixote, he knows you are doing your best.

He finished the meds and his ears and tongue went pinker then I would like but not purple.  The vet is not concerned.  He is acting itchier than normal.  So he is ANNOYING right now.  He wants me to scratch and rub his left side (the side with no back leg).  I think he is just being BOSSY and Needy more then itchy though.
