One broken, One amputated

I have an 11 month old Red Heeler who is definitely a survivor. My dog was attacked outside our house on July 1st at around 4pm. I came home to find him leaned up against my front dog with his right paw completely mauled. I rushed him to the vet and they knew right away that there was no way to save his leg. So we decided to amputate his right front leg and he had the surgery the next morning. Right before surgery we got a phone call saying that his left front leg was broken, it was the worst case scenario. We still did the surgery and I am very happy we did because today he is that same spunky Heeler that he used to be. I was very happy when things got back to normal until today I found out that his broken leg is not healing appropriately and they think his growth plate has been affected. All I can do is wait now and hope that his body has enough in it to heal……

Hi! Nice to meet you, Im sorry to meet you under these circumstances but since your dog has the trouble that he does, you have found one of the very best places for support and advice that you ever could. It sounds like your dog is a fighter, dont worry, he will have the strength to heal, and one thing my Cooper has taught me in his battle against cancer, give them a chance, heck give them a half a chance and they amaze you with their strength and resilience! Try not to worry too much, I know its easier said than done, but it really helps to just take a day at a time. Please keep us updated as to how your dogs journey is going!

Oh my goodness!  What attacked him?  And how?

There is always an option of a cart.  Sending you healing wishes.

Welcome! If your dog could fight through amputation surgery, I have no doubt that he'll be able to make it through whatever it takes to get that other leg going again. Doggies are very strong creatures, it's kind of funny how we have a harder time with things than they do sometimes!

We'll be sending good thoughts that his broken leg heals the way it should! :)

So sorry your sweet boy was attacked! And now has to contend with this medical stuff.

Our dogs are so resilient. It's true that if his remianing leg doesn't  heal correctly there is always the option of a cart. Heelers are really amazing dogs and can deal with a lot!

Sending best healing wishes,

You may want to check with the vets about a brace to help support that front leg whilst healing.  Try orthopets.com, they made a brace for Angas when we were trying to build up the strength in his leg and knee before the reconstruction surgery.

Ohhh poor guy! What's his name? Did you find the creature that did it? I'm so sorry.

His size is a big advantage, hopefully that leg will heal. Are you getting a second opinion from an orthopedic specialist?

Thank you for joining us here, we hope to be a source of support as your pup heals and things get back to normal.

Racheyrhea,

I think you're the one just literally down the street from me. Your pup got attached by the cougar in the daytime, right?

You're on 123rd, in Lake Stevens ?

I'm on 2nd.

How's your pup doing?

I'm holding the good thoughts that his leg will heal well. Hey, we know that those Aussie Cattledogs are tough pups !

I couldn't tell from the news story which section of 123rd that you're on……..south of hwy92 or the section north ???

Hey rachel!!! Let me know i theres anything I can help you with. We share a building with 4 board certified surgeons, so maybe they could do a specialty consult to help rileys leg. Shannon works there – you should check with her. They also have a rehab doctor that might have some ideas.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. His name is Riley and he is a very energetic little boy. We are not sure what attacked him, my vets think that it was a cougar and fish and game thinks it was a pack of coyotes. It happened right out in our front yard, and yes I do live on 123rd on the north side. We have thought about rehab specialists but it is too expensive right now. His splint will be on for at least another month but he is doing well it is just so hard to keep him down. Once again thank you all for your kind thoughts.
