Hi everyone!

My name is Bec, and I'm quite new here. I came across the site after my three legged dog, Ziggy, started to have troubles with his one remaining front leg. We adopted him as a rescue dog in early June this year and he has brought so much love into our lives. He's a real sweet boy. He's now just over 7 months old, and unfortunately has angular limb deformity in his one front leg. He had surgery aiming to correct it a few weeks ago, and we're now on the rocky path to recovery.

He is being treated by a specialist at an animal hospital near our home city in Brisbane, Australia, and is in great hands. But because his three-leggedness means we can't expect a 'normal' recovery there are a lot of uncertainties ahead.
For now, while he continues to grow, his front leg is bandaged up with a splint. The bone had not only bent, but also started to corkscrew, so the idea is that the splint will encourage the bone to straighten while he is still growing. We'll have some more scans to see how it has progressed, and then we might have more time on the splint, more time with a new splint, or more surgery. We are hopeful for positive progress, but for all of Ziggy's time with us he has really had one health issue after another (infected eye, paralysis tick, night time vomiting, chronic diarrhoea...), so we are planning for the worst case - which is more surgery and a lot more care.

At the moment he needs constant supervision and his activity limited so he doesn't damage his leg any more while he is healing and hopefully the growth is correcting. Because of the bandage, any toilet trips require that we cover his bandage to prevent it getting wet or dirty, so every trip out to the garden takes time wrapping the leg, carrying Ziggy, and bringing him back in. We love him so much, but it is hard work.

I had started a blog about Ziggy's treatment before joining Tripawds, so I've just copied it all over to his blog space here: ziggysjourney.tripawds.com

A big lesson for us is that a puppy with three legs really does need special care, and different rules to a 'normal' dog. I wish we had found Tripawds when Ziggy first came home with us. The adoption centre told us to treat him no differently to a four legged dog, and when we signed up to a preventative health plan with the local vet - and asked what we needed to do becasue of his three-leggedness - we were told to make sure we didn't go easy on him because of his missing limb. We thought we had done the right thing by seeking expert opinions, but unfortunately we weren't warned about the potential damage to the growth plates in his one front leg due to the strain of being a growing puppy and carrying so much weight on just one leg.

The x-rays before Ziggy's treatment indicate that there may have been a fracture in his elbow which led to the damage to the growth plate - but it's inconclusive. It might be an injury from before we adopted him, or something since he has been with us. It's heartbreaking to think that what he is going through now could have been prevented by better care from us, his humans, if only we had known.

Thanks for reading Ziggy's story, and I look forward to getting to know everyone here :)

Bec and Ziggy, welcome. I hope you don't mind but I moved your post here to "Beyond Cancer" because this is a great place to learn from unique situations like Ziggy's. First, let me say that you are an amazing pawrent who has shown nothing but love and compassion to a very special doggie who needs it most. In short, you are amazing! Don't beat yourself up for what you didn't know before you came here, this is a learning experience for all of us, myself included. We are here to support and learn from one another and all the experts we interview so rest assured your journey with Ziggy will be supported with helping hands and paws.

I have to run for a bit but I promise I'll be back to dive into his blog, thanks so much for starting one. By doing so, you are helping others and making the world better for dogs like Ziggy. Lots of love & thanks coming your way across the ocean!

Welcome to the community Bec and Ziggy!  You are in good hands around here.

Sorry to hear about poor Zig having to go through so much and such a young age.  But you sound like wonderful parents for him to have found.  My current tripawd Adelaide had a bad break at 2 months old in her previous owner's care and they didn't fix it.  The break was across two growth plates and as she was growing, her leg was corkscrewing as well.  Here is the only picture I have of her with 4 legs:

Baby AdelaideImage Enlarger

Her foster parents took her to a number of vets to come up with a plan for her, and they decided that the low success rate of her prognosis warranted amputation above the many surgeries that would be required.  Every case would be different.  She lost her leg at 5 months old.  She is now 2 1/2 years old and has been with me a year and a half.  She is a wholy terror.   :D  Two things I can say: a young amputee or surgical patient in your case, can really do well, and second, with high energy little ones, you might want to try a lot of mental stimulation to keep Zigs energy in check.  With his age, that can be lots of training and puzzle games.  It will help burn some of that energy while he's not as mobile as he wants to be.  Don't hesitate to shout any questions or ask for any mental support you may need.

Karma, Adelaide and the crew, and our forever angel Brendol

Adelaide is a young tripawd Husky, from an injury.  Her amp was on 10/1/12.  She has 4 sisters, Aissa (a senior border collie/chow), Maggie May (a puppy Great Pyrenees), Mathilde and Morrigan and 1 baby brother, Bagheera.  We are all watched over by our angel Brendol, who was dx with OSA 1/30/13, amp on 2/6/13, and left us on 8/20/13.

Hi folks,

Thanks for the lovely replies - it's so great to know there are kind people like yourselves offering support across the oceans!

It is SUCH a learning experience, and I'm really pleased to have found this great resource here for three-legged dog care :)

Thanks Karma for the advice about the mental stimulation! Ziggy isn't into toys a great deal, though he does enjoy the Kongs we give to him throughout the day. Because his exercise at the moment is basically nil, we're cautious about over-feeding him and adding extra weight to his challenges. So we're taking portions out of his daily kibble ration and giving just a few extra, special, treats - fruit, yogurt, and a wee bit of peanut butter.

Poor Adelaide, her leg looks so painful in that photo, but it's great to know she's going well now!

We are finding one of the challenges with Ziggy is toileting - we need to cover his bandaged leg with plastic before we go. We've just bought a specially made boot which hopefully will make things easier! We're also struggling with the bandage gradually slipping off, meaning our trips to the animal hospital (which is an hour's drive away) are happening more frequently than we would like. Hopefully the protective boot will solve the toileting issue, and maybe we can find a solution to the bandage slipping!

Thanks again everyone for the support

Bec :)

PS - here's the protective boot we've ordered, it might be helpful for others ! http://medivetp.....cts.com/

Hi Sally,

Thanks so much for the kind words! I've actually just added another update about Ziggy - he's going as well as he can during this recovery period despite some challenges along the way. Once we receive the boot I'll be sure to report back on how it goes - for a relatively cheap item we are hopeful it will prove a great time and stress saver!

Geez I can't believe that poor Ziggy had to go through that awful bandaging experience! Poor little guy. Just glad you picked up on it and all is well now. Give him a smooch from us.

And meanwhile thanks for the link for the Medipaw boot, that's really cool!

Thanks for the info on the front paw. I have a little one that was born with a deformed and shortened front paw, and will now take extra care of her remaining paw. She simply has to either descend stairs or a ramp with a hop off at the end to go "busy, busy," but it really helps to know that now i will make sure she doesn't race down or jump out of the back of the wagon at the end of a drive.

You two are wonderful, just wonderful. And Ziggie just melts my heart. One of these days, I'll get it together to get a photo up of mine, Isabella, but for now, so glad to have you here. I was so glad to find this place, too, even though i've been away a lot.

you are all an inspiration.

Hi everybody!

Thanks for the replies and for including the pic of the 'medipaw' Jerry :) We're still waiting for it to come in the mail, but big hopes it makes things easier with the bandaged front leg.

And thanks Sally for the kind thought about our recent 'adventures' with Ziggy! We have had a pretty poor response from the vet who bandaged Ziggy's leg - unapologetic and blaming the informaition that was provided. Even if there was inadequate information given, the fact that Zig was crying and twitching and in pain, and we had to cut the bandage off 5 hours after it was put on, and call an emergency vet, and give him a pain killer, and strapping tape was put directly onto his leg.... One would think there might be some thoughtfulness, even if the nature of vet practice means apologies aren't given (which I suppose I can understand). But we're also on a 'health care plan' with the vet, and apparently are not allowed to cancel it until the 12 month term is up, even though we never want to go there again because we feel they are incompetent! Oh well, life lessons to remember for the future :)

I'm glad to hear that for polarbear (sorry I don't know your proper name!) what Ziggy is going through might be helpful for Isabella. I'd love to see pics of her :)

Have a great weekend ahead everyone, and thanks as always for the kind support.

Our Cooper lost his leg as a young dog as well (less than a year old), and I always worry about that remaining front leg, as he is very active.  He moves really fast because he uses those back legs to propel himself, like a kangaroo, or something!  I'm always telling him to stop kicking me with those kangaroo legs when we are on the couch together LOL.  This is good information that you shared, Bec.  I'm sorry your dog has had to go through this.  Hello from Cooper!

big-blinkbig-blinkbig-blink

Cooper (11/11/11 - 3/29/24) was a hound-collie mix "mutt" who was badly injured as a puppy and lost his leg at 7 months of age.  We adopted him after the operation.  He' was wonderful companion and comforting presence in our family for 12 years. He lived a fabulous life on three legs and was an inspiration to all. We will never forget our Coopie-Doopie-Doo.

Hi to Cooper!! Thanks for saying hello and it's funny to hear about the kangaroo legs!! Ziggy does that sometimes, too, and it's hilarious. Glad the information is helpful :)

And thanks for the weekend wishes from Jerry's human! We went okay, though there was a midnight vomit from Ziggy, and while it was nothing to worry about it the silly sausage put his face in it, so we had some intensive baby-wipe sponge bathing the next day as we can't bathe him while he has the bandage on.... Oh Zig.

Take care everyone!

Oh don't you know, doggie vomit is even tastier the second time around?! ;) You may want to try a dry shampoo if the bandage needs to stay on a long time. Here's a post about them:

Glad things went well this weekend. paws crossed for a great week ahead!
