My Layla's front left leg was amputated. We got her back on friday and over the weekend things went bad. She was "leaking" blood and her infection began to eat her skin. She actually had penny size holes where you can see inside her. We rushed her to the vet this morning. They said she was too weak to do the surgery today and scheduled for tomorrow. They are getting fluids in her and plan to remove the infected skin, and they just "pull" her extra skin together to make up for the loss. Has anyone ever experienced this before....PLEASE HELP!

There's a pup on the site named Bud, his mom uses the name "anjl" to post, that had a really nasty MRSA infection. He went through a lot, but fought it off in the end and is still around and happy today. She doesn't come on too often anymore, and I don't know if he had to have the same sort of surgery that Layla needs to have, but he is definitely a 'success' story after fighting off an extremely nasty infection!

Keep us posted!

Abby: Aug 1, 2009 – Jan 10, 2012. Our beautiful rescue pup lived LARGE with osteosarcoma for 15 months – half her way-too-short life. I think our "halflistic" approach (mixing traditional meds + supplements) helped her thrive. (PM me for details. I'm happy to help.) She had lung mets for over a year. They took her from us in the end, but they cannot take her spirit! She will live forever in our hearts. She loved the beach and giving kisses and going to In-N-Out for a Flying Dutchman. Bud acquired MRSA while trying to save the leg, it caused the second break and amputation. He had a secondary skin infection also. However it was not at the amp site.

I honestly do not know if it is possible, because your pup has probably already been on antibiotics, but I would ask them to culture a sample of the infected skin. Some infections such as MRSA are drug resistent so it is best to find out what drugs they are sensitive too within a culture.

Hopefully you do not need any this advice because your situation isn't taking a similar path and there will be speedy recovery! We battled for many months but do have a success story.

Don't hesitate to PM if you have any questions I could help with. I do check in often even if I haven't posted for awhile.

Thanks Jackie for thinking of us (we like to help if we can)  smooches to Rita and Angel Abby!

Well they believe the infection is gangrene..they took away more skin than they wanted to, they are keeping her for the week and going to continuously flush her with antibiotics. We are hoping for the best result.
