Tomorrow will be 1 week since Bailey had to have her right front leg removed. I've been prepared for a tough week....but, I've been so relieved that it has been very easy going. Bailey has been a trooper from the very first day home. She eats each meal, goes outside to potty, has stopped whining and is getting up and walking about a few times each day. We built her a ramp to go up and down the stairs to go outside - and she mastered it on the first try. She's taken one bad slip on the kitchen floor and is going more cautiously now when she still tries to venture in there. Mostly she is still sleeping alot (still on Tramadol - 1/2 tablet approx. every 10 hours), but, I couldn't be more pleased with her 1 week progress.

One question - does anyone else find that their tripawd seems to move better if they move quickly? Bailey seems to be more comfortable moving quickly than slowly. Of course, the vet says to try to keep her slow....it's a bit of a battle between us smiley

Here's hoping for week #2 to go as smoothly!

Murphy definitely moves better at a faster pace. However, he is a year past his amp, and we did really work hard to keep him slowed down, particularly after his hip replacement.
Kathi

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Yes, it is much easier for dogs missing a limb to hop along at a quicker pace. Hence our tagline around here—It's better to hop on three legs than to limp on four.

We cover this and much more in the Tripawds e-books .

Great update on Bailey! Souds like she's ahead of the "curve" in her recovery.

Resting a lot is very normal as is the "faster pace". A lotof energy is used walkingon tnree legs so they need a lotof "rest stops" when on a "walk about"

Thanks fr the great update.....smiles all over the place!

Hugs!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

My Franklin was a front left amputation and yup.. they move quicker.  They have to otherwise they don't get that "taipwad hop" down pat.  I was once told never to expect a tripawd to heel.. and they were right!

Good to hear that Bailey is doing good with the amputation!  It does our heart good when we hear the successes!!

Have you tried to get some throw rugs down for the floors in thekitchen etc?  I bought those washable rubber backed mats.  Slippery floors are a tripawds worst enemy.  I even have them down still because my Maggie is starting to get stiff and shaking in her walking now with her hips.  She will be 12 in Feb and sometimes she slips on the laminate.

Keep us posted!

Christine..... with Franklin in her heart♥

Franklin, he was the Happiest Dog on Three Legs! Diagnosed 09/26/2012 with Osteosarcoma, amputated 12/4/2012.  Had a wonderful 5 1/2 months painfree until he ran for the Bridge on 5/15/2013.  Always in my heart, and always a guardian angel of my pack...   You can follow his Tripawd Adventures, before and after, in my blog, Frank'n'Farter!

Ohh yeah, you'll wear out your running shoes trying to keep up with a Tripawd, especially a front-legger. They need the speed and momentum to stay balanced, it's just easier that way. I think maybe your vet meant to keep her activity slow and limited, as in don't let her too much for a few weeks.

Glad to hear things are going so well, it sounds like the ideal recovery!
