Hello! I thank you in advance for you time!

I have a 6-year old, male, Rottweiler. He weighs 100 lbs. He just had his front left leg amputated on 4/6/15. It has been a little over two weeks. His staples were removed this past Monday, 4/20/15. Just this week my husband and I have noticed a gooey residue on his fur located towards the bottom half of his surgery site. It is slimy, and hard to remove from his fur, and it is yellow in color. We have given Bruce two baths this week, hoping it would help get some of that off of him, but it seems to not be working. Any advice?

Thank you!

Wow....I have no idea what that could be.  It reminds me of puss type fluid from an infection but his incision is healed with staples removed.  Is there a foul odor or anything?  So have you been able to clean any of it away to only have more come back?  If so it has to be coming from somewhere.  I would definitely make contact with Bruce's vet and if possible maybe email them this picture.

If Bruce is dealing with some sort of infection you don't want it to go for to long without getting him started back on antibiotics.

Please keep us updated on what this is that's going on with sweet Bruce.

There is not really a foul smell to it. And, Bruce is still on anti-biotic meds, he has about a weeks worth left. When we give Bruce a bath, I feel like we get very little of this to come off his fur, but it seems to be the same about as before, like the baths are not helping. I have called our vet and described it to them. We will be taking Bruce to the vet later this afternoon when my husband gets home from work.

Yeah, I suggest a vet visit too. And I definitely wouldnt give anymore baths or use any "cleanser" on it right now.

Not a vet, okay? It could be more of a skin type infection..some sort of dermatitis. Did it shownup after the bath, or before? If after, maybe even some sort of allergice reactiin.

Bruce, you are a silly boy! You just like going to the vet, huh?

Let us know what th vet says.

I have no clue as we didn't experience that but it looks like an infection of some sort... I am no vet but I would take him to the vet if possible.

Good luck!

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife

It does look like infection so he may need a stronger antibiotic or even a minor surgery to open and flush the wound.

Broken record, playing again!!!!!blush Sorry! When you go to vet, have them take some of the gunk and send for a culture. This looks eerily familiar. If they culture, that can make sure he is on the right antibiotic to get rid of the infection. I fought long and hard for that to be done. INSIST!!!! I let a lot of time go by thinking, well they are the experts. The quicker you get it, if it in fact infection, the easier it is to heal. Let us know what you find out, Lori, Ty & gang

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

I thought I had deleted these. Not at all sure why I still have them. This is Ty's infection the day I finally got the vet to listen to me. You can see, the incision had healed beautifully. The infection pocket is in front of it. I had gotten a lot of the yellow gunk off and it sort of took the fur with it. I kept calling them and even had him in once and they were like no worries! This photo got their attention. We were on our way there in 10 minutes after I sent this. Unfortunately, the culture takes 5-7 days to come back and some skin had died by then He had to have a surgery to take it out. Again, I asked why don't we just give him the MRSA drug now. She said it is expensive and just wait for culture. If you look closely, you can see he has small holes where the fluid is leaking. I am not trying to be a Scary Mary, just want to help someone else avoid the extra stuff we went through. If we had diagnosed it earlier, a lot would have been avoided.

Yellow and gooey looks a lot like infection.  Also not a vet, but I would definitely look into it.

good luck!

Hi Everyone! I want to give you all an update on Bruce and the yellow goo ... We took Bruce to the vet this afternoon and had Dr. O'Keefe take a look at him. It has been determined that this is a mild dermatitis. It is not coming from the surgery wound, and is only topical. He inspected the surgery scar area, and all of that skin is healed and closed up. There is no pocket of fluid anywhere. Also, Bruce is already on anti-biotics, which we will continue to give him for the next week (that's how many pills I have left). In addition Dr. O'Keefe gave us some topical powder to use on the area. This will help dry out the goo, and help us clean it out of his fur. We apply this power 2-3 times a day until either the goo is gone or we run out of powder, in which case we will get more. Dr. O'Keefe is not worried. He is confident that this will clear up in a few days. Fingers crossed! Thanks for all your feedback!

Love from Sabre and Bruce
