Daryl had his front right leg amputated due to an unfixed injury on July 14th. So he is just a bit over 2 months out. He is pretty active, I am really trying to keep it down. He will every once in awhile let out a yelp. He id it tonight as my husband was playing tug of war with him. He said he was pulling very gently. I am afraid he is still healing internally. Or should that be done by now. He has done this like 4 times in the week since I have adopted him. Since Ty was so inactive and never got to the point of being completely off pain meds, this is a new experience in a sense. I told my hubby no more pulling on his toy for a bit. That does not account for the other times. Should I be concerned that something is wrong? Other than that, he acts totally normal, crazy but normal. Thanks, Lori. Ty and the menagerieway-confused

TY GUY, Best Black Lab ever! Diagnosed  and had amp in January, 2014. Kicked MRSA's butt. Earned his angel wings on April 16, 2014. Run Free my boy and don't forget a shoe. Ty is a proud member of the " April Angels". Ty sent us Daryl, a Tripawd rescue in Sept. of 2016. Daryl is 5 +or -. We are also Pawrents to Chandler, a Border Collie mix who is 15 and 1/2, Lucy, a Corgi who is 7, 2 minis, 2 horses, and a feisty cat named Zoe. Zoe had a non skeletal Osteosarcoma removed in July 2015. No Chemo, she was at least 16. She is going strong although she is now completely blind. She is now close to 20 and her hobbies are eating and sleeping in front of her personal heater.

Sorry Daryl is javing some bursts of pain....The good Doctor can give you advice.

But I can tell you that sometimes it can be phantom pain showing up. Does he yelp and try and run away from "it"..and then it's over in about ten seconds?

Gabapentin is the pain med that works best for that.

The other thing Mr. "Jump over a four foot fence" Daryl could be doing...is over doing it! Maybe you could talk with his foster and see if this happened when he was with her. Daryl probably has had very little exercise or chance to build his muscles properly.

I love that your hubby is playing "gently" wiTh him.....this Daryl guy is sooooo meant to be!

LOVE YOU!

Sally and Happy Hannah and Merry Myrtle

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

I hope Dr. Wiltzius can chime in soon. Meanwhile, I'm thinking 2 months out still isn't a lot of time and in a game like tug, it's probably a bit too much at this point. Also, some dogs are just sensitive when being picked up in certain ways. Pay attention to how you're handling him when he yelps and see if not handling him like that helps. Otherwise it does sound to me like he's a pretty normal puppy!

If he is normal most of the time then I would not worry.  He still could be healing all of his deep tissues and nerves.  Gabapentin could help so I would discuss with your vet.
