OfflineMy dog Misty has been a tripawd for 4 yrs now and i have only just recently gotten her back from the RSPCA after 5 yrs not seeing her, but my ex had put her in there (
) and i don't remember her snoring as bad as she does now. If there is nothing to fix it, that would be OK its just she looks like that she needs to take a deeper breath in and she just snorts almost like a pig! She only struggles with breathing in deep, while sleeping, or when she sighs (deep breath in then out quickly). She is 7 now, and she is a Ridge back X ( i think cattle, because she has spots on her neck, and I'm not sure if Ridge backs have got spots) with a beautiful personality, sometimes i think she thinks she is a person lol. Its disappointing to because she likes to sleep in our room, and my fiance has to get up early and she keeps him awake, and we feel really guilty because she has always slept in with us, until now, even when we are in the family room and she is sleeping we cant relax sometimes because she is snoring so loudly, and we hate waking her just to try and move her around to get her in a position that might get her to stop or not snore so loud. I just hope someone has some advise… any advise..

OfflineTaSh, you've come to the right Forum, I"m sure that Dr. Pam will have some good suggestions for you. Who knows, maybe dogs get sleep apnea too? That's some pretty loud snoring, poor girl!
We're glad to hear you got her back, she sounds like a sweet dog. Thank you for joining us here, it's great having another member in Australia. Are you near all of that flooding? We hope not!
Stay tuned, I'm sure there will be some ideas here for you. Unfortunately I'm perplexed about this.

OfflineHello TaSh- can you get your fiance some earplugs?
Hopefully Dr Pam will be able to enlighten you. Glad you were reunited with Misty!!
Long-nosed breeds don't typically snore as much as short-faced dogs (like Bulldogs or Pugs). Does she breathe loudly when she is awake? If she was in a shelter then she could have had a sinus infection which could affect breathing sounds long after the bacteria is gone. Other possibilities include benign nasal polyps, fungal infection, or even cancer (rare for a 7 year old and most would have bloody discharge from the nose).
Unfortunately an exact diagnosis often requires a scope procedure called rhinoscopy which can be pricey ($2000 in our area).

OfflineGood info as always Pam, thank you. I can't believe it costs so much to stick something up a dog's nose! Wow!

OfflineThank You all so much, i feel right at home already
. Thank you for your concern about the floods to im in nsw south wales, the floods are in queensland, but its big here at the moment.
Thank You Dr Pam, that is really insightful, i just have always been confused about it and the volunteers at the shelter, didnt have much insight at all. She actually only does it when she's laying in certain positions, but even if i move her around a bit she still does it, and she'll be sitting up and sighs (deep breath in then quickly out) and a snort or snore occours then too. She does rub her nose with her paws a fair bit onw i think about it. Well if thats what i need to do to help her ill i shall take her to the vet, this time ill push it, i cant stand to see and hear her for that fact, trying to breath, especially when its mostly when she is asleep, she goes in such a deep sleep sometimes, you can scream "wanna go for walkies" as loud as you can and she is out cold.. She likes her sleep

OfflineHey I just noticed that you guys are in New South Wales. Are you in any of the flooded areas? We sure hope not! Hope you're all fine, let us know, k?

I'm not a vet, but I thought I would tell you what our vet said about our other dog who sometimes snored. The vet thinks our other dog (not the tripawd) has allergies, because she would get stuffed up (therefore snore) and sore ears. We now have her on hollistic food which has helped somewhat (more for her ears than snoring).
Anyway, hopefully you guys get this figured out!
-Chloe's mom
Hey about the floods fortunately we are in another state, but its the biggest story in the country at the moment, the worst floods that Queensland has seen in 50 or so years! And the weird thing is that only just last year or the year before, that state was in the drought! Its only bad for the fact that whole towns are being evacuated!
Hi Chloe's mom you made me think about her allergy.. i just didnt think it would of had anything to do with it, she is allergic to some types of grass, im not sure what type i just no when i took her back to get her stitches taken out when she was de-sexed 5months ago, i asked them about her eyes always being red, and that is what they told me that its probable a type of grass! But she eats grass alot! I found out that its a myth that dogs eat grass because that are sick, but she gets upset when i tell her not to, even when we are at the park throwing the ball, she will stop where the ball is because its far enough for her not to have me tell her not to. If it was just sometimes she did it, i dont think i would mind, but since they told me that it concerns me alittle. But thank you for that little insight, i think you have hit the nail on the head for me but i still have an app to see the vet in 2 weeks time.. Its good to have some ideas of what it might be and some more info for me to give the vet when i see her.
Thank You Muchly
