OfflineHi,
First… I did a search already and didn't find anything specific to what I was looking for (drug AND dx).
So, Champ is 9 months post-spleenectomy, and 5 months post-amputation – hemangiosarcoma. Our oncologist last week found a 1.5 cm nodule in his lung.
I just talked to her about options and, well, my research is not leading me to any answers so I'm hoping someone here (or Dr. Pam) may have a thought on this.
1. We are increasing his metronomic chemo to 7 days a week.
2. We are getting an xray in 3 weeks to see what the growth rate is.
3. The oncologist gave me some additional chemo suggestions — Carboplatin or Mitoxantrone
Here is where I am getting confused… Carboplatin is noted for osteosarcoma but no mention on hemangiosarcoma… Mitoxantrone is not mentioned for hemangiosarcoma either.
She had mentioned palladia but after some thought and more research we've decided against this.
I still want to fight this with anything I can. I just don't want to put him through chemo if it doesn't do anything.
Has anyone heard anything about these drugs in relation to hemangiosarcoma?
Thanks,
Joy

OfflineI'm so sorry Joy. Champ is such a fighter though.
I can't offer you any experience with chemo. Maybe someone can chime in.
Lots of hugs to you.

She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
HSA does not traditionally respond to much besides Cytoxan and Adriamycin. It may be worth a try to use one of the other drugs but I do not have experience with them for that type of cancer.

OfflineThanks for the reply. Unfortunately that is what I am reading in the research as well.
My only thought here is this…
The tumor on his spleen was very small (golf ball sized) for a spleenic mass. The cancer in his femur had been diagnosed almost 5 months earlier by xray. There were no other masses in his abdomen, lungs, or in any other bones. We had xrays done of every bone in his body. After the amputation the pathology on the femur was inconclusive as to the type of cancer.
I know it's far-fetched but…
Could the cancer that was in the bone have osteosarcoma and therefore a separate cancer from the spleen? My oncologist is sure that the femur was a metastatic lesion from the hemangiosarcoma… but… why would the leg present first? If the spleenic mass had been there first, wouldn't it have been MUCH larger than golf-ball sized? Wouldn't there have been other masses?
If it's possible that this is metastisis from an osteosarcoma, might we see some benefit from carboplatin?
I know… I'm grasping at straws but… if it were my kid I'd be doing the same thing… doesn't he deserve this??? I love my baby…
Thanks,
Joy

OfflineJoy,
Of course, I know nothing about cancer except with hemangio but I never got a diagnoses until it was too late on both Rugby and Comet.
Tsuvsha, a tripawd member had hemangio in her bone when they thought it was osteo. It was hemangio. It later showed up in her vital organs. Here's her story: http://labrador…..pawds.com/
You may want to search her member ID labradorim to see her forum post since we had very extensive conversations about it.
Best wishes.
