OfflineI wanted to know if the human grade glucosamine chondroitin with MSM supplements are safe for dogs. I have seen them on sale now a couple times (at CVS – buy one and get one free right now) and with that deal they would be considerably cheaper than the Dasuquin which looks like it is very similar – but these are NOT a chewable kind…
I ask because I see how much all the various supplements cost and for some of us it might mean the difference between being able to afford a supplement or not.
Here is a sample of one of the BOGO sales I have seen recently.

Thank you!

Human grade products are safe, but since they are not regulated by the FDA they may not always contain what the label says. For instance, the label might read 1000 mg glucosamine but lab testing might only show 5% to 20% of that amount. Consumer Reports Magazine did a report a few years ago and I remember that the NatureMade brand always had good results (90% or higher). The reason that I like Dasuquin is that it is guaranteed 99% pure so I can trust what I am buying. Not all animal products are guaranteed so you have to read the label! I do know that it is very pricey so if you need to use a human product the only one that I would personally suggest is NatureMade. They often have "2 for 1" sales at RiteAid or Walgreen's.

OfflinePam,
Thanks for the reply. I do hear what you are saying about the purity of the product, that does go a long way – I guess that's likely why they are more costly. I will check out the NatureMade and see how easily I am able to sneak those into his food. I am lucky that he licks up the fish oil like it's a treat! I know affordability is not exactly something that comes with an aging dog with cancer but I'm just trying to find ways to give him everything he needs while still making ends meet.
Thanks again for the reply!

OfflineHey that's good to know, thanks!
Yesterday I was at the vet, and we were told that Cosequin is another one that has been proven to be quality stuff. The vet said that Cosequin, or any brand that has been scientifically proven to get absorbed into the body, is the one you want to get. Apparently only a few like Cosequin and Dasequin have been able to prove this.
