Hi,
Our 6 month old puppy, Zuzu, loves to eat Holly's poop. I try to be vigilant about picking it up each time Holly goes outside, but sometimes in the morning she can be pretty covert. And Zuzu has such a great nose that if there's something that I haven't found, she is sure to find it. Twice she has had really loose stools and I think both times followed when she ate Holly's poop. Holly's on metronomics, so I don't think it's good for Zuzu if she does find it (not that it's ever good for them, but I'm afraid Holly's poop is particularly toxic right now). Our vet and oncologist suggested trying Accent in Holly's food, but I forgot to ask how much to put in. For now I'm only taking Zuzu out on leash, but would really love to let her out off leash again. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks, as always!

OfflineGood luck with that! Skyler loved Chloe's poop, and she could find even the tiniest piece in tall grass. When she was young, we had put chili powder on some poop to discourage her from wanting to eat it – but instead she was happy that we had seasoned it for her. We never could break her of that habit, so will certainly keep the Accent idea for future pups.
Because Holly is Ill, she may not be completely digesting her food and thus the poop is looked upon as nourishment by your puppy, Zuzu. (I love the name, Zuzu). Zuzu may be trying to supplement her diet now but this can become habit forming. I know this isn't a suggestion on how to fix the problem but it might be an indication as to why she is doing it.
I hope you can get this problem fixed. Wishing you, Holly, and Zuzu all the best.

OfflineOh Zuzu!
I was watching a show on Animal Planet once and this dog ate really fast and as a result I guess the poop had some undigested stuff in it and then the dog ate that. They put some pineapple in the food, and apparently even though the dog still liked the food, it made the poop less appetizing. They also got one of the special food bowls to slow down eating, but I suppose that's not relevant here. Good luck!
Thanks for the posts – I will definitely check out the links you sent, Rene! And I laughed so hard about Skylar thinking you were seasoning Chloe's poop – I could definitely see that happening here. Thanks Sadie's mom and Fortis's dad for your support, too! Brett – I think you may be on to something that I hadn't thought about. We're on day 1 of Accent in both dog bowls – and I must say that it is a big hit!
<– that's for Zuzu eating Holly's poop, not for Accent!

OfflineI'm so grossed out!
Comet's tabasco song didn't work?! Does she need to sing it again?!
Okay, I fess us – Rugby did it and we went round and round. He ate the carrots out of Comet's. I couldn't take my eye off of him for 2 seconds. Nothing worked. Of course I didn't try chili powder! YUM! (oh, that was so funny GG!)
I couldn't bring myself to giving Comet MSG. I bought the pills from the vet only to find out it was basically expensive MSG!
So, I sprayed Rugby's mouth with Chloraseptic when I caught him. (that was for my benefit hoping it would kill the germs)
So, I hate to ruin your wonderful relationship with Zuzu but I think if she doesn't stop when she is just a bit older, she may never. Rugby never did. It's a terrible thing.
Comet - 1999 to 2011She departed us unexpectedly January 23, 2011 at the age of 12 1/2.
She was born with a deformed front leg and a tripawd all of her life.
This is a gross habit that many pups outgrow on their own. You can try adding Accent to the dog's food to make the stool taste worse on the way out but this does not always work. I have had better luck with Forbid (powder) or Coproban(chewable tablet) added to the food but these do also often contain MSG. The hot sauce on the stool trick can be effective but you have to be quick! I have had the best luck spraying Bitter Apple directly in the pup's mouth as soon as they pick up stool. Of course you have to watch them all of the time but it usually only takes one or two squirts in the mouth to break the habit.
