Hi,

It's just 4 weeks yesterday since we lost Milo, the best dog our family has ever known.  We were in no hurry to get a new dog.  The last of our 5 kids is in college.  Maybe it would be nice to be able to go away on the weekends, perhaps visiting the 4 kids who live in 4 other states (FL, MD, VA, CO -- not easy driving distances.)  Or we could go into Boston after work, or stay in the the inner suburbs for a njce dinner without having to head home to the boondocks first to care for a dog.  Dogs, like kids, are great, but they use a lot of time, require planning, and squash spontaneity.

Or so that was the plan.....

However, here's reality. Meet Darcy:

She is 11 weeks old today, and clocked in at 12.9 lbs at her vet visit.  Yes - that's mostly fur you see.  She is precious and very much puppy, e.g., peeing, pooping, and chewing everything!  She looks just like Milo did at this age.  We got her at 2 months, 12 days.  He was 2 months, 9 days.  I had forgotten all the 'joys' of puppies!  Aye-yi-yi.  She has us totally wrapped around her tiny dew claws already.

Darcy's great-grandfather is the same as Milo's grandfather.  After Milo crossed to the rainbow bridge, I was hunkered down in the basement hiding from the noise of having our roof worked on.  I remembered my baby Milo had been descended from Cool Dude, an Australian Labradoodle with an inspirational story.  (http://www.rutl.....serve.html)  While poking around to find the story, I found that a breeder in California still had Cool Dude's son, and Milo's GFather, Baby Joey listed on her site.  I sent her an email and found out that Baby Joey crossed in May at age 13, but that two of his descendants are being bred by two breeders in Massachusetts.  When we got Milo 10 years ago, I had talked to 3 breeders - and these 2 were 2 of those 3.  I went to their websites and one (Farrel) had just sired puppies.  I sent an email to the breeder and 3 were still available.  I also found out that the breeder still had Milo's GMother's littermate, and that the dam was descended from her across 5 generations or so.  The littermate is 13+ and we met her when we picked Darcy.  It just so happens Darcy's mom looks just like Milo's GMother.

So here we are with an 11 week old puppy that shares some bloodlines with Milo.  It wasn't the plan, and sort of seems disrespectful to have a new puppy so soon, but the ties were right, and the timing.  My college boys will be home alot over the holidays for bonding, training, and using up puppy energy.

BTW, the only way I had time to find a few pics and write this is because the high school girl across the street took Darcy to her house to play for a bit.  Puppies!

Peace,

Jenifer & Milo & puppy Darcy

P.S.  She is named for Mrs. Elizabeth Bennett Darcy from Pride & Prejudice.  She was almost Dagny for Dagny Taggart, but is more sweet and a bit silly like Lizzie Bennett than the more driven and serious engineer Dagny.

Welcome little Miss Darcy!  She is adorable!  Years and years ago after I lost my very first collie I was looking at puppies and came across one that shared one of my first collies ancestors.  Somehow that gave me an instant connect there and Jake went on to become my absolute ❤️ Dog.  As my collies came and sadly left I figured out it was the collie breed I was actually in love with.  Who knew?  Guess Lassie was a big part of my childhood hu?   It's not disrespectful at all for you to have gotten a puppy.  That is exactly what Milo would have wanted for you.  He was probably working behind the scenes to set up this "not planned" puppy.  Oh yea Milos paw is all over this one.  We know you're not replacing Milo you're filling the emptiness and the void sweet Milo left in your home and in your hearts. Milo wants you to have joy in your life.  It sounds like Darcy is filling that need quite well.  😀😀. Congratulations!

What a wonderful story!  There are so many emotions inherent in getting a new family member so soon after a loss, but sometimes I think it is just right.  (Gator does too)  And this just sounds right to be welcoming Milo's little cousin (?) into your home and family.

Otis - 106 pound lab/Dane mix, lost his right front leg to osteosarcoma on Febuary 9, 2016.  Four rounds of carboplatin completed in April, 2016.  Lung mets August 25, 2016.  Said goodbye too soon on September 4, 2016.   Lost his adopted sister, Tess, suddenly on October 9, 2016. likely due to hemangiosarcoma.

Wherever they are, they are together.

When it is right it is right!

Congrats on puppy Darcy and you are absolutely crazy for adopting a puppy!  I didn't adopt my Ms. Elizabeth Bennett until she was 10 months old big-grin

My pugs have all been named after Shakespearean characters, my uncle was an actor as well as a pug breeder, he also showed his pugs.  When I adopted Obie I changed his name from Diego to Oberon, so I had Titania and Oberon from Midsummer.  Elly is half pug so Shakespeare wasn't right, but I wanted to stay with literature.  The Shakes company I work for has done Jane Austen the last 3 years including P&P in 2014 so I went with Ms. Bennett, Elly for short.

Can't wait for more pictures and stories!

What a little doll! Congratulations to all of you. Yes, Milo definitely had a paw or three in this one. Just the kind of good news we all needed today.

Kathi and the Turbotail April Angel...and the Labradork

Murphy is a five year old Lab/Chessie cross. He was hit by a car on 10/29/12 and became a Tripawd on 11/24/12. On 2/5/13, he had a total hip replacement on his remaining back leg. He has absolutely no idea that he has only three legs!

UPDATE: Murphy lived his life to the fullest, right up until an aggressive bone lesion took him across the Rainbow Bridge on April 9, 2015 and he gained his membership in the April Angels. Run free, my love. You deserve it!

Darcy is absolutely darling. My sister has a labradoodle who she says is the best dog ever. When we lost Maggie my husband wanted a puppy and I wanted a rescue dog. We lost Maggie at 2 days after her 6th birthday so he felt if we got any "older" dog she would die of cancer. I do understand his thought processes. So I got Hank and he was only 4 weeks old (I didn't know, thought he was older). Yikes the whole puppy thing began, poor thing had a terrible bladder infection, peed everywhere. We did have another dog who I thought needed a friend but in reality she would have been fine as an only dog. We also talk about going without a dog to allow us more freedom but I am so attached to my dogs and all my animals, they are my therapy that I can't imagine not having a dog (or horse) and the joy I get when I get home and pet everyone is just something I can't live without (or don't want to). But we should start a topic on why we name our dogs or cats. Blink came with her name as a rescue but I wanted my husband to name the puppy and he loves Hank Willliams so that is what he is named. Have fun with your little girl, Milo would approve.

Our story: Broke rear leg in June 2013 - non-conclusive results for cancer so leg was plated and pinned. Enlarged spleen in September 2013 and had it removed and was diagnosed with Hemangiosarcoma and started chemotherapy. Became a Tripawd January 8th, 2014 and definitive Hemangiosarcoma diagnosis. Three major surgeries in 7 months and Shelby took them all like a champ only to lose her battle to cancer in her brain. We had 8 amazing extra months together and no regrets. #shelbystrong #loveofmylife
