POST PICTURES HERE 24/7!!! We LOVE pics of Jasper Lily and Shelby ALWAYS!

Well look who I found on the kitchen counter this a.m. while I was making my lunch ... she's put her paws up there before but I didn't think she had the cojones to actually get ON the counter. #notacat

Just like her big sister and I always did ... we'll have to have a conversation about 'boundaries"....

AND THIS takes TRUE talent... sound asleep but w/her low-growl... we had a lot of people walking up and down the stairs last night so she was barky central until she crashed. But was still on-guard w/the low-growl. I hate that she barks. I really do.  I am not used to a dog that barks and doesn't shut it when I ask her to. We'll work on that. Water bottle back in action!

OH my gosh does she have springs on her paws? How did she get up there?!

Well the barking can definitely be controlled in time. Train, treat, train, treat, you'll get there.

P.S. Everyone is acting crazy with that big ol' full moon. Should be an interesting weekend.

LOL! She used the back of the couch as a step and just walked her way up there. That is actually a ledge right above my actual kitchen counter. She was heading toward my salad when I stopped her. So clearly, I need to move the couch away from the ledge. :-)

That's right ... the full moon! That definitely explains her behavior yesterday and this week... completely insane.

I know I'm a little late to the discussion....crazy a$$ snow storm came in and Lucian bugs the crap out of me when I try to get on the computer.  Anyway...when Lucian was doing all his scratching and biting I switched his food and gave him Claritin but he continued to itch.  We noticed he was scratching so much that he was tearing up the insides of his ears (he would scratch his ears, neck, and throat area).  We were putting Neosporin on the insides of his ears to try and get the wounds to heal up but he was constantly scratching.  So after about 2 weeks or so hubby finally agreed we should take Lucian to the vet.  He had a mild bacterial infection and yeast in his ears.  The vet cleaned the ears out with an iodine solution, gave him a steroid injection, prescribed Cephalexin, and ear drops (antibiotic/steroid).

After this course of treatment Lucian hasn't been scratching nowhere near like he was.  I know how itchy yeast can make me when that issue comes up (ugh) so I can relate to how his ears were feeling...sad

Could there be something going on with Jasper's ears?  Has the vet checked them out?

Just a thought since we just went through this with Lucian.

LOVE THE PICS!! Good job utilizing that new couch to your advantage Jasper Lily!!clap I can only imagine how proud that made her feel! This dog just melts my heart!!

And growling while sleeping....now that's a real guard dog!!! I read somewhere that when a dog barks to let you know and warn you something is amiss, to get up and acknowledge their bark. Let them know you are checking things out and let them know everything is okay. A pat on the head a d bring them back to their normal routine. Then if the bark haplens again right after you've let them know everything is okay, that's when you do s training thing. They just need to know that you heard them give y ou a warning or else they feel like they have ro keep warning you of danger...something like that anyway!!

Frankie Huckleberry is THE most vocal dog I have EVER heard! He vocalizes EVERYTHING! I realize that's what coonhounds do, but he has no ear for music...he shrieks and "shrills" and is completely off key! Turst me, a good WOOF WOOF is a beautiful sound.....unless, of course, you are a Coonhound!

Happy Hannah had a glorious additional bonus time of over one yr & two months after amp for osteo! She made me laugh everyday! Joined April's Angels after send off meal of steak, ice cream, M&Ms & deer poop!

found this on Planet Paws FB page.  Might try it I don't know if it works or not

Apple Cider Vinegar Tea Body Rinse

Introducing the yeast-smashing homemade spray for your dog! After Dogs Naturally Magazine broke the Internet with this post last spring, Pet Nutrition Blogger Rodney Habib added his spin by creating the visual for this easy-to-make homemade recipe.

This body rinse can be useful to restore skin pH, soothe itchy skin, calm rashes and welts, and has some added benefits for keeping biting flies, fleas and gnats at bay.

Mix the following ingredients together in a bottle/jar with cap and shake well before use:

Apple Cider Vinegar: 1/2 cup
Brewed Green Tea (cooled): 1/2 cup
Distilled Water: 1 cup
Apply to clean skin and coat, massage, rinse, and pat dry.

Foot licking is probably environmental allergies.  Here in the Seattle area we have had a warm winter and the trees are already blooming. Julian is on allergy vaccines but he had hives for the first time in 3 years this past weekend so I had to give him an antihistamine (I use hydroxyzine).  If antihistamines work they are pretty safe.  Your vet or a dermatologist can do an allergy test to identify the offending allergens and then make a vaccine.  Julian is allergic to trees and grass as well as people and house dust.  He gets one injection every 2-3 weeks and frequent baths and for the most part needs no other meds.  Prednisone works great but has long-term side effects but there is a new drug called Apoquel that works quickly but with minimal side effects.  It is on backorder until April/May but that is another option.

The dose of fish oil is 180 mg/10 pounds.  That amount refers to the omega 3 levels, not the total fish oil dose.

Haven't heard of that site. Ugh. I don't need one more social media account to keep up with. Crazy!

Thought of you and Jasper when I saw this. I really respect Dr. Becker, she has some good insight here. I know you said Jasper doesn't have fleas but maybe the rest of the article will give you some ideas:

Help Your Dog Overcome These 3 Common Allergies...

Unlike the vast majority of traditional DVMs, I wholeheartedly disagree your pet should be started right away on a regimen of anti-allergy drugs and antibiotics and/or anti-viral medications.

There are safer ways to relieve your dog's symptoms than pharmaceuticals while you and your vet work to discover the root cause of the allergic reaction.

Relieving symptoms without addressing the source of the problem is a short term fix to what can become a lifelong health problem. And certain drugs used to stop the allergic cycle have significant, potentially very serious side effects.

I didn't know you were in Seattle! That's my home town and Jasper and I are headed up there in a couple weeks again! I will say, when we were there in the winter, her allergies weren't as bad so that's why I do think it is environmental and sadly, we live in LA and not much we can do about that!

Thanks Michelle for the link. It is harder to bathe Jasper at home since I can't quite get to her in the bathtub w/the way my sink is but could toss on a bathing suit and get in with her like I used to with Shelby. I'll try that this week. (Good times).

thanks Rene ..... great info! That is exactly what I would like to try before signing JL up for a lifetime of pills! :-) But I think this spring she definitely needs them. I am super itchy and I know it's the Santa Ana winds.

I've been down the frustrating allergy road twice.  Trouble was horrible, would lick her paws until they were bloody and oozy.  The thing that best controlled hers was frequent baths, and almost daily antihistamines. And I hated it.  I finally put her on Atopica, but it is really pricy and I'm not sure it didn't contribute to the Osteosarcoma.  Vet's Best Hot Spot Spray has tea tree oil that seemed to sooth Trouble almost immediately.  (Emmi acted like it was eating her skin - so try just a little on a small spot)

Emmi has allergies to a lesser degree.  I tried the apple cider vinegar on her and she acted like that burned also.  It is suppose to be good for keeping yeast under control.  Emmi gets a couple bites of yogurt daily, and I had someone suggest colloidal silver in her water or wiped on her skin, but I haven't tried it.  I did start her on Apoquel and it has been a life saver.  She hasn't been to the vet since August, and I normally had her in at least monthly for allergy related issues.

Just adding to this allergy thread.

Meesha, our recent adoption, has had this odor problem. We've washed her, spritzed her, and many other things. But within a day she's right back to being my stinky little girl.

I was truly hoping that this wasn't caused by a food intolerance because they're just so hard to single out. However, I started her on Benadryl and Pepcid. Guess what? She doesn't stink near as bad. So, I'm still not convinced it's her food as we've been changing it and her "treats" with no affect. Only the Pepcid worked. Frankly the Benadryl hasn't helped at all. She still rubs up against the furniture and us like a cat. And I don't think that's seasonal since she's pretty much done it since we got her. She licks and scratches everything. That makes me think it's systemic.

My next step is to fix her some chicken and rice and see how she reacts.

Whew, stinky/itchy doggie, I shore do luv ya!

Harmony became a Tripawd on 10/21/14 (MCT). She left us way too soon on 11/1/14.

More and more great advice!!!! thank you so much! I love this help and insight for my little non-tripawd! Shelby was picture perfect health so this is definitely uncharted territory for me and I have to say, patience is not on of my strong suits. :-)

Ironically... as the Santa Ana winds ramp up here in So. Cal and I look as though I am either drunk as a skunk or just became a vampire with blood red eyes, Jasper's allergies seemed fine last night. Or maybe she was just too distracted by the people outside last night and was practicing her vocal chords (she was drenched by the spray bottle when I was done with her and kept on barking!!!!).

I am out of her allergy meds so I'll give her a benadryl if she starts up again tonight. I really think it is environmental and it makes sense that whatever she steps on outside, she drags inside w/her.

Oh and as far as her scent... I guess she has a different fur than Shelby because Jasper smells like dog ... and after being outside for a long walk, she does smell like she has BO. It's odd ... it dissipates but when we first come inside, whoa ... it's like a teenage boy with her fragrance!!! WOW.
