We've been smelling of "Eau de Pet Foode" a lot ourselves way-confused We went in today for Charlie's checkup.  They removed the drain and gave him an appetite stimulant.  It did seem to work.  He's not eating a lot, but he is eating on his own without us having to start with a syringe.  He also had a temp of 104 degrees, which is a little high for a cat.  They want us to bring him back Wednesday to follow up, though if he has any other concerning symptoms showing up we have to bring him back in through emergency.  His incision still looks great, though.  No outward signs of infection.  He didn't have his anti-inflammatory drug today (it's three days, one day off, three days, etc), so they thought that might contribute.  He is loving his new orthopedic pet bed we put into a small dog crate.  We covered the crate with a blanket and he is using that to hide instead of going under the bed. We have our fingers crossed that he will perk up by tomorrow.  He also peed again today!  Small victories are holding us together at this point.

Though, I can't shake the feeling that we're just going to do something wrong.  He's not our regular Charlie, but we don't know what is normal post-surgery Charlie or sick Charlie.  It also sucks that the side effects of his medications are similar to the warning signs they gave us.  It's so hard to tell which is which.

YOU AND CHARLIW ARE BOTH DOING A GREAT JOB!!!!   Everything you've described as far as what Charlie AND YOU are experiencing sounds pretty darn "normal" during this "new normal" part of the recovery!   And YAY for you for a tear free Vet visit!

Eating better...feytting the drain out...peeing...resring in his cave....all signs of PROGRESS!!!!

You are doing everything right okay??  You are gaining more confidence and starting to relax more!  Good job!!!

Keep a little notebook of the little progesses you are seeing to remind yourself that Charlie is moving forward...slooooowly but surely!!! 🙂  Soon, you will see Charlie return to some of his normal routines and be sure and make note of those too!

Hugs!

They didn't give us any antibiotics for the temperature.  I was actually kind of surprised by that, but they said that the temp could be due to inflammation since he wasn't scheduled to have his steroid that day.  They want us to come back Wednesday to follow up on the temp and to come in before our appointment if any other symptoms show up.  They may have been right since Charlie seemed to feel much better this morning.  He wasn't as warm to the touch and was more alert.

I took this photo of Charlie sleeping on my son yesterday morning: Charlie SleepImage Enlarger

Charlie's drain was taken out later that day.  He's been sticking pretty close to his human.

What a beautiful bond these two have!!  Such a sweet photoheart Clearly sleeping next to his boy is very therapeutic 🙂

Glad it seems as though the fever is getting back to normal.  That in itself will help Charlie feel better.

Hugs

Congratulations on not crying at the vet too!  Love the picture of Charlie and your son, so sweet.

Obie was just not quite right for a while, I think part is the pain medicine too.  But as long as Charlie is comfortable and doing the three big things - eating, peeing, pooping, he is doing terrific!

Good work with this situation!!

We're still waiting for him to poop, but with all the trouble we had getting him to eat I guess it would make sense.  He has been eating today, so I really, really hope he poops soon.  We are going for a follow up tomorrow at the vet hospital and I'll mention it.

You are right, when he's not eating much, there isn't a lot coming out.  I think it was about a week before Obie pooped.  Big, big day it was!

if you think Charlie would go for it, you can consider mixing a little baby food squash or pumpkin in with his food for fiber.  Obie really seems to like the way it tastes.

It's the news I didn't want to get. It is an injection site sarcoma. They said the margins appear clean, but there were cells detected that were different from the sarcoma cells in an area that runs along the major nerves and blood vessels where the leg and abdomen meets. It may just be inflammation, but don't know for sure. Either way, he needs further treatment. I'm crying again.

Radiation is really expensive. We have to do it for Charlie, though. I know it was mentioned on this thread that there is a way to recoup treatment costs from the vaccine company and I may need some help with that.

I am so sorry to hear. It's very good news that the margins appear clean.  Will you be having additional tests to see if they can tell what the cells are?

Obie did radiation, and he handled it well.  His black, black fur turned white in that area and makes a lovely contrast.  A fashion statement.

There is a thread that tells about how to ask for cost reimbursement.  Purrkin's momma knows it if she is on, but I will look too.

Hugs to you and Charlie.

Here is a link to the article to read on how to be reimbursed. Sorry, I have not read it yet.

I'm sorry that Charlie's cancer was caused by an injection. The results don't make sense to me that the margins are clean yet they found some type of cells. Perhaps you can have the vet provide you with the pathologist's report to explain it to you. Remember that you can always get a second opinion and take some time to breathe and make the best decision for Charlie and your family.

Annette and Obie gave you the best link with the information you need for possible reimbursement. The pharmaceutical company reimbursed me for 50% of the cost of amputation. Unbeknownst to me, my vet submitted the info to the company and they sent the cheque to the vet.

It seems as though it's easier to get the reimbursement these days as I read that one company offered up to $3,000 based upon the vet phoning the company. Many years ago, when people were fighting for reimbursements, one fellow got tens of thousands of dollars after relentlessly hounding the company. He was successful once he found the CEOs personal home phone number!

I sure hope your vet can help you get reimbursement for your costs to date and commitment to help cover future costs.

Charlie is so handsome and so lucky to have his family who loves him very much.

Wonderful feedback from our Powerful Kitty Contingent!!    Pretty darn good support, eh??

Remember that Charlie doesn't give a rat's butt about what any ole' report shows!   Kitty Mona sure didn't pay any attention over three uears ago!!

Just keep things chunked down for now a d get through the recovery.  Gather information from your Vet and do some research.  You have time to decide how you want to proceed and can deal with that later.

And let us know when Charlie poopicon_png!  We celebrate anything around here!

Lots of hugs
