Located at the north end of the ballfields at Tony Grampsas Memorial Sports Complex at 44th and Salvia, the enclosed area is a 2.5 acre site, 300 yards north of the main parking lot. Just follow the sidewalk to it’s end past the ballfields!

Come one, come all! This shady park is a fun place to explore, but carry your own water in. We’ll bring a few jugs, but it’s a good idea to bring your own too.

On Saturday April 29, over 600 walkers gathered in Elk Grove near Sacramento to walk in support of Morris’ groundbreaking work to end canine cancer.

Team Tripawds raised a whopping $1,540, more money than ever before, which propelled us to the 8th most successful fundraising team out of 30 that registered.

The Tripawds Tribute leash also made its first public debut. Stay tuned for an update about this beatiful project  from Modpawd Karen.

Your Help Supports Morris’ Scientific Successes

Currently cancer is the no. 1 cause of death in dogs over the age of 2. Morris Animal Foundation will use proceeds from the walk to fund studies that will help create a healthier tomorrow for dogs.

Through Morris’ Cure Canine Cancer campaign, they are currently funding more than 35 canine cancer studies.

In 2011, Morris studies yielded a number of promising results, particularly in the areas of treatment and genetics.

Morris funding helped scientists

• Identify advantages of administering chemotherapy in frequent, low-level doses in dogs
• Discover genetic information that could lead to a prognostic lymphoma test
• Evaluate the usefulness of advanced imaging techniques to determine early treatment response noninvasively
• Identify inherited deficiencies in the ability of Golden Retrievers with lymphoma to repair DNA

New developments like these are taking place all the time, and each one brings us one step closer to better preventions, treatments and, one day, a cure.

It is difficult to share this sad news, because I know how much it broke my pawrents heart to hear it. But on Saturday, April 28,my dear friend Eisen earned his wings in Colorado.

I will try not to be sad, and hope that the hoppy memories of me and Eisen will dry the tears in my Momma’s eyes. You see, Eisen was the last surviving pup in my circle of Tripawd friends who I played with. We are all angels now.

He is no longer on earth, but what an amazing, beautiful life he had, for 13 years!

What makes Eisen especially remarkable is that for the last four years, he beat osteosarcoma, and proved that nine out of ten statistics are wrong!

As one of the earliest Tripawds members, it feels like Eisen and I have known each other all our lives. When his mom wrote to us in 2007 after he got diagnosed with bone cancer, I told her “Don’t worry Ma! Eisen will be fine. Remember, his name means “strong”!

Eisen lived up to his name.  Chemo? Forget it. He didn’t have any. Instead, he and his momma made the most of the cards they were dealt. After the diagnosis and amputation, they listened to their hearts and focused on quality of life, not quantity. Perhaps he beat the odds because they followed the holistic advice of Dr. Charles Loops. You just never know what cancer will do.

The last few years were met with some of life’s toughest challenges for Eisen’s pack, but in typical German Shepherd fashion, he was always there to put things in order, and perspective.

Eisen made sure that everyone understood their mission: to live life to the fullest!

Our play dates seem like a million years ago. Those picture perfect Rocky Mountain days will always stay in my pawrents’ hearts, forever and ever. And when they think of me and Eisen playing together again on the big mountain in the sky, they smile.

This special group has been meeting semi-regularly in the Seattle region for a couple of years.

Although cancer has taken the lives of some of the original Tripawds in this group, the disease cannot break the bond these folks share.

Since coming together to learn how to cope with amputation and bone cancer, they have formed friendships to last a lifetime.

2. Post an announcement in ourTripawds Three Legged Dog Facebook Page. We have tons of Facebook memberswho don’t visit the Discussion Forums, and vice versa. Tell Facebook fans to visit the Forums to help plan the event.
3. Choose a date and location. From dog parks to beaches to backyards, Tripawd pawties have been held in every type of location.
4. Share the logistics with us in the Tripawd Parties topic. We’ll help promote it here and on our Facebook Page.
5. Download and create a Tripawds Pawty Flier if you’re really ambitious, to post at local dog parks and pet stores!
6. Name Your Price for Tripawd Bandannas! The bandannas make great pawty favors and all proceeds go to help maintain the Tripawds community.

The Magic Continues

The Nor Cal Tripawds Chapter is our most active face-to-face group in the world. Members like Lylee and Spirit Maggie’s Pack, Karen, Obie and Tani, often get together to share stories about life on three legs, and just be among other dog-centric friends.

Of course, it’s also a fantastic way to celebrate the incredible stories of long-term cancer survivors like Cemil, who is now nearly three years out from his osteosarcoma diagnosis. This big boy is a three-paw miracle!

Some folks, like Spirit Maximutt’s pack, John, Diane and quadpawds Bernie and Linda, even travel all the way from Southern California (about 10 hours away) to reunite with old friends who helped them get through the cancer journey.

When new members join in, the circle grows and the bonds grow stronger.

When a dog has cancer, it’s especially important to carefully consider your dog’s risk of exposure to environmental dangers like wild animal bites, ticks, etc., and weigh the risks and benefits of each vaccine before proceeding.

You may be surprised to learn that the chance of contracting certain diseases is exceptionally low in your part of the world, especially if your dog spends most of the day indoors.

How to Waive a Rabies Vaccine Requirement

Should you decide to eliminate vaccines altogether, you’ll encounter a few obstacles, especially when it comes to boarding or licensing your dog. The rabies vaccine is the only vaccine mandated by every state in the U.S. because of the risk this disease poses to both humans and animals. However, if you and your veterinarian both believe that your dog can be harmed by the vaccine, you might have a way to avoid the rabies vaccine requirement.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) recently announced that while it does support the National Association of State Public Health Veterinarians’ (NASPHV) recommendation that all dogs, cats, and ferrets should be vaccinated to protect against rabies infection, the AVMA now recognizes some animals might require a waiver from rabies vaccination when it poses an unacceptably high risk to the health of an animal.

If adequate steps can be taken to minimize the chance of exposure to rabies virus, the AVMA recommends that such animals be granted a waiver from mandatory rabies vaccination, upon recommendation of a licensed veterinarian and with the concurrence of the appropriate public health authorities.

The AVMA goes on to state on this recent policy announcement that the vaccine waiver “should be based upon clinical evidence that the animal would be at considerable risk of being harmed by the vaccine because of a diagnosed medical condition . . . and the appropriate public health authorities concur that the waiver should be issued.”

If you want to be at the forefront of the movement to avoid rabies vaccines in dogs with cancer, you may have your work cut out for you, but the AVMA’s downloadable rabies waiver template is a great place for you and your vet to start.
