Tripawd Tuesday: The Right Decision for Remy

When a brand new Tripawd parent takes time to share their story for Tripawd Tuesday, we are so grateful. More stories = more hope to those just beginning their own journey. Take Remy, for example. Her inspawrational transition to three legs was just what the dogtor ordered. Now her parents know they made the right decision for her. Here’s how her dad James tells it:

The Right Decision for Remy

Tripawd Remy recovery

Remy is our 5 1/2 yr old golden retriever mix.  Back in early June, we noticed she had a lump on her left front wrist so brought her to the veterinarian.  After several tests, Remy was diagnosed with bone cancer.  The veterinarian went over the different treatment options for Remy.

We were unsure about what was the best option for her.  We started researching the different options and came across the tripawds website.  This website was very helpful and helped us make the decision to have her leg amputated.  The website provided us with guidance on what to expect and how to prepare the house so Remy would be comfortable when she came home after surgery.

We prepared the house with yoga mats, doggie beds, an inflatable dog collar, and anything that would make her recovery easier for her.  On June 28, the surgery was performed and thankfully there were no complications.  Remy was hospitalized until July 1. When we picked her up at the hospital, we were concerned about trying to pick her up to put her in our truck.  Before we knew it, she had jumped in without a problem.

Tripawd Remy recovery

The first two weeks of recovery I think were tougher on us than her.  Remy didn’t have any issues at all. She was eating, sleeping and taking her medications.  We limited her visitors until her stitches were taken out on July 8.  We ended up making a t-shirt for her so she wouldn’t have to wear the collar.  She seemed to prefer the t-shirt much better than the collar.  She didn’t even need her new doggie beds; she had no problem getting back to her usual spot on the couch.

On July 5, Remy started her chemotherapy.  Again, she is having no issues with the treatment.  Every day, she is getting better and better.  We couldn’t be any happier and know we made the right decision about her care.
